William Barlow
William Barlow
I am looking for my grandfather, William Barlow, son of George Barlow. He was born in 1882. When he married in 1903 he gave his occupation as fireman, the same as his father (by then deceased). I know he spent time at sea. Could fireman be a seafaring job?
Any help gratefully received!

First of all yes a fireman would have worked on a ship, somebody else would know better than me, but I believe he would have stoked the engine, I may be corrected on the exact work that he did, but certainly he worked on ships.
Secondly, can you tell us if he is the same William as posted about here http://liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/phpBB ... ght=#61492 and were there two people posting about different Williams or the same William? Nobody answered Tina's query and that might have helped discovering something about the family.

It is a different William. Tina suggested I start a new trail as it was obviously not the same one as the set of posts before. It was my William who went to New Orleans and Australia. On the marriage certificate his father is named as George ( but as deceased) and his occupation is also fireman.
thanks

Hi Vivian
There are a number of Wm's arriving at Ellis Island N.Y
I've looked at a couple of them, he's a pantryman.
These records are quite a number of years after the 1911 census but his age is a match.
