Headstone inscription West Derby cemetery
Headstone inscription West Derby cemetery
Has anyone transcribed the headstones at West derby cemetery?
I have been sent a copy of a headstone but cannot read all the inscription and I was wondering if anyone could provide the details.
The reference in the cemetery is Sec 8,grave 541 C of E.
The headstone is apparently lying down, and is to 'Ben' husband of Nellie Rawson, his mother Eliza, and Captain John Williams.
Thank you for your help.

There have been posts on this recently. There are some online produced by a real enthusiast. I was lucky enough to find mine.
As I reported here it is possible to have a photo of the stone e-mailed to you if you know the grave number. On the West Derby site this is the e-mail address to which you write, for a photograph:-
To: patsy_welsh2001 [at] yahoo.co.uk
I don't think it is a problem putting this e-mail address on here - it is, as I have said accessible to anyone who looks at the W. Derby site. However if Mary thinks it shouldn't be here I apologise in advance.

A very impressive headstone, not in the least bit weatherworn considering its age.
Ever loving memory of
Ben
The Dearly Beloved husband of Nellie Rawson
Who died April 10th 1892, aged 32 years
'God called him'
Also of Eliza, Mother of the above
Who died Jan 7th 1893, aged 78 years
'Jesu lover of my Soul
Let me to Thy bosom fly
While the gathering waters roll
While the tempest still is high'
In sad but ever loving memory of
Captain John Williams
The dearly beloved husband of Nellie Williams
Who died Nov 24th 1905, aged 53 years
'At rest'

Hi Holly,
Thanks for your hard work.
I knew it was the right grave as the details of her first husband were known.
I was sent a photo of the headstone but it had obviously been taken after the grass had been cut so not all the inscription was readable and the photo was taken at an angle because the headstone is lying down.
John Williams was also married previously so the next step is to track down descendants of the children from the first marriage.
I would also love to trace details of the ship he was captain of.
Many thanks for everyone's advice and help.

Hi Tina and thank you for your kind words -
Hi John and glad to have been of help. Don't want to teach you how to blow eggs BUT I had a plot number and the name of the Deed holder, when I enquired at the graveyard office the lady was able to tell me the names of all the internees and the address of where they died. In my case I had a grave with 7 internees the first burial in 1878 and the last in 1962! I only knew of one of them!
Good luck - Holly

No.. 7664 !
I reckon she's with her husbands and Mum in Law. Apart from the above I've mentioned I also have a headstone with just the name of my Gt Grandmother inscribed, but on enquiring I find Gt Grandad, his 2nd wife and his brother in law and his nephew buried with her. Monumental Inscriptions are not always what they seem!

Hi John and Holly.
Nellie's name was Helen. After the Captain died in 1905 and before 1911 she left Liverpool for Nottinghamshire.I found her on the 1911 census with their 3 children and her daughter from the marriage to Benjamin Rawson. She was a head teacher and passed away in 1947 aged 80 in Nottinghamshire.
So she did not return to be buried with her late husbands.
