Please don't take this as sexist or derogatory, but I am sharing your information with real people and I don't know whether to say He or She said.
Can you please enlighten me ?
Thanks
Alan ( or have I missed the obvious in past posts ?)
Hi Alan,
Apologies for the delay in replying.. All that Clarence excitement gave me a mild heart attack which left me incommunicado for a while.
To answer your question as to the correct gender... It's 'he'!

Just to update the people who have helped me on this site. I contacted the LRO asking for advice and they provided me with a list of recommended researchers. I contacted one of these and have received substantial information about the crime James Whittemore (Whitmore), who I am hoping was James Cahill, committed.
Details were sent to me quoting from the Calendars of Prisoners document. This James broke and entered a house. He was sentenced to 14 days Hard Labour and 5 years on the reformatory ship "Clarence."
However the researcher was unable to find an address which might have linked him to John Whittemore who married the widowed Bridget Cahill.
The researcher goes on to say after trying many, many variants, she is of the opinion that James Cahill and family have been missed off the 1891 census.
