Look up please - Obituary 1905

I am looking for the obituary for my Great Grandfather John Williams.
He died 24th November 1905 at 4 Chapel Avenue,Walton,West Derby.age 53,he was a Master Mariner.The informant was his widow Helen Clay Williams.Would he have been buried in the local cemetery which I think would have been Kirkdale.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

People who don't live in Liverpool don't tend to realise that the names of the cemeteries don't match the area they are in ie Kirkdale cemetery is in Fazakerley and West Derby Cemetery is in Croxteth/Norris Green. Anfield is indeed in Anfield

Firstly what religion was he since if he was RC, then Ford is another to take into account.

If somebody manages to check the newspaper for you then the cemetery might be named.

There is a cemetary a few streets away from Chapel Avenue, it is located at the junction of Rice Lane/ Hornby Road. your chap may have been buried there. Unfortunately I've forgotten the name of the cem, but someone on the forum may know it....The author Robert Tressell is buried there, as are lots of local people from the early 1900's. Also Chapel Avenue still exists, its a lovely old street with lots of large old houses.

Thanks for the advice.I tried to find the nearest cemetery by looking at maps of the area.I thought Kirkdale was within 2 miles according to google.
With regard to his religion.He was a Master Mariner and travelled a lot to Lisbon,Portugal.I have a letter from the Minister of a church there to his widow expressing condolences.I looked up the church and it was St Andrews Church of Scotland so I believe he was not Catholic.

I don't know if you've seen this already here's a recent photo of St Andrew's Church Of Scotland or Presbyterian Church. It was in a state of decay for many years and there's been a campaign to renovate it. Rodney Street is a famous old Liverpool street it's in the Georgian quarter. I passed this church every time I went to a dental specialist in Rodney Street as a kid. It's got an atmosphere about it I would have loved to have explored it rather than endure the dentist's waiting room:-

Hi John John Williams is buried in west derby cemetery . mode of burial subsuquent dont know what that means anyway its sec8 grave 541, he was buried on the 27th nov. the obituary was in the liverpool echo but was barely legible so i did not try to copy it. the minister was non conformist a rev gurney Irene

Probably only about three miles away from Chapel Avenue, you can put this into googlemaps and also Lower House Lane for the cemetery and see the locations.

Subsequent means there was a burial before him. So someone of the same family is interred in that grave

Thanks to you all for your replies.It has been most helpful.To have actually tied down the details so fast i quite amazing.
John Williams was my mum's grandfather.He was born in Liverpool and I have found that he was previously married and had 3 children from that marriage.I have got my mum and a cousin back in touch but no one knew about the 3 earlier children.I would really like to link them back into the tree.
Thanks for the details Irene.Its a pity that the copy in barely readable.I was hoping it may give more details of family and perhaps the ship he was reputed to be Captain of.Is there a date for the issue of the paper?Does the Liverpool echo still exist? and is it possible to get a copy?

Yes the Liverpool Echo is our major newspaper and has it's own site http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/

I can't promise that they would be able to supply you with a copy, they may refer you to the Record Office, but if you explain that you have already tried there it's worth a shot.

Yes I contacted the Echo.They only keep copies for the last 2 years.Earlier copies are at the Central Library.

As you have the date of the newspaper email or ring the Record Office and ask if they will either copy the entry or transcribe the entry for you. However as Irene said the entry was very difficult to read so this may not be possible.

By the way I don't have too much of a problem with Nellie for Helen I've heard Nellie used for Helen Ellen and Eleanor.

Just Nellie from Irene! and I agree that Nellie would be a pet name for Ellen, Helen and Eleanor, so it would be right for your entry.

Hi Irene,
The authorities tell me that there are 2 section 8s.One Catholic and one C of E. Am i right to assume C of E? They also only have detailed records for West Derby from 1930 but should be able to give me interment numbers and the place to check these.

Some time ago I was given the plot where my g.g.g.grandmother was buried in West Derby Cemetery in 1937. I discovered that there are two or three peopledoing their level best to transcribe the MIs. They will also if you ask and can provide the plot number visit and if there is a grave stone, will photograph it and e-mail it to you.

Apologies if everyone on this forum knows this already but if not it is and has been very helpful for me at least.

I will wait till I get the interment numbers from The Cemetery and Crematoria dept this week and see where it leads me.
