MARRIAGE 1875
MARRIAGE 1875
I am trying to find out where a marriage took place in 1875 between Mary Ann Flemming or Fleming and Thomas Hughes I believe it was Liverpool but I cannot find it on the Lancashire BMD site, it was June time.
I have a Mary Ann Fleming marrying a John O'Brien un March 1881 in St. Peter's. We think it possibily a second marriage. In the 1891 census her older child 10 was shown underneath her younger one. I also have a Mary Ann Fleming born March 1856 Liverpool this is not on Lancashire BMD either. Any thoughts appreciated.

Hi Marie,
The lancsbmd site is an ongoing project and the marriages are transcribed and put on by volunteers, so maybe that particular marriage hasn't been covered yet.
I think you may have to order the cert to find out.

MARRIAGE 1875
Someone else gave me the information and definately say they found Mary Ann Fleming marrying Thomas Hughes in Jun 1875. They found the John O'Brien marrying Mary Ann fleming in Mar 1881 in FreeBMD. So I can only assume that is where they found the other one.

Re: MARRIAGE 1875
I would suggest that you ask them for the details, including the reference number and then you would be able to order the marriage certificate from the GRO.Marie wrote:Someone else gave me the information
The marriage for Mary A Flem[m]ing to John O'Brien took place in St Peters during the first quarter of 1881.
My advice would be to visit the Liverpool Record Office and view this marriage and see what Mary Ann's status was and what the name of her father was. The records for St Peter's are on microfilm.

FLEMING/HUGHES
I have found the marriage on FreeBMD. I will go in and look at the 1881 marriage and check St Peters for the 1875 also before ordering. Thank you for your help.
I'll be interested to see what you find, particularly the entry on FreeBMD.

Hi
If she married twice, 1875 to Hughes, then 1881 to O'Brien.. surely the second marriage would be in her first married name of Hughes, not in Fleming again

MARY ANN FLEMING/HUGHES/O'BRIEN
Hi Simone and Mary A,
FreeBMD shows Mary Ann Fleming and Thomas Hughes a Hunt and Murton on the same page 8b 149. The reason I need to look at them is because of the confusion over Mary Ann the elder child by 5 years being below Elizabeth the younger child in 1891 census, which is strange. Elizabeth obviously was John O'brien's child. We have come to the conculsion that the older child was either illegitimate or to a previous partner. We want to see whether Mary Ann O'Brien was previously married to a Hughes as we cannot find Mary and John O'Brien in an earlier census as a couple. I always thought her name was Mary Hughes but strange things happen.
This is why we are checking it out to confirm everything.

FLEMING/HUGHES/O'BRIEN
Murton is on the same page and there are 3 other names including Thomas Hughes and Mary Fleming.

Yes Marie,
They all married at St Nicholas church, if you see the sequence in the ref numbers above, I would say they all married the same day, Ephraim and Mary A also had a daughter Mary A

Just to add to Jan's post, the other couple on the free bmd page of marriages,
Thomas Hughes is in 1881 census with his wife Elizabeth E
eldest kiddie 4yrs old which fits with 1875 marriage.
1881 is the clue, John should be married to Mary A by time of census.

Perhaps Marie isn't aware of the difference between Parish Registers and the GRO indexes.
FreeBMD is an ongoing project, the aim of which is to transcribe the Civil Registration index of births, marriages and deaths for England and Wales. For marriages these index pages may have 2, 4 or 8 names to a page - see the reference and page number given by the side of each entry. Any male could have married one of the females and without purchasing the certificate it would not be known from the index who married who.
The LancashireBMD site is also an ongoing project but the entries are transcribed from the Parish Registers themselves, so each couple is matched up with the spouses, and the church the marriage took place in, so we can be fairly sure of it's accuracy.
You may wish to read some pointers that have been put together here http://liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/phpBB ... php?t=6937
