George Arthur Smith

Post by dot326 »

Am still trying to piece together my friends family!!

Have had to leave the Adam Andersons at least for a while.

George A Smith m Esther Foran. His father was George Smith--a Carter

Have just got George Arthur Smith birth cert.
Born July 1884 66 Louis St
Father George --a Carter and mother Sarah Taylor.

I think I have George A in 1891. Father George is from Oxford and Sarah from Manchester

Can't find George with any certainty in 1901.

There is a marriage of a George Smith to a Sarah Taylor in 1870.
Can't find them in 1871 or 81.
This marriage seems a bit early!!!! as Sarah says she is born in 1860???

Need help!!!
Thanks, Dorothy

Hi Dot
Yep Sarah is 9 or 10 yrs younger than George.
Their eldest John A bn 1883.
1881 lodging in Cheetham
George Smith b Oxf 29 salesman, Sarah 21 bn M'ter, no kiddies.
Newlyweds you would think...
1901 they are still in Kirkdale, 2 boys railway porters, few more kiddies, no George A.
There is a George boarding in Everton, spring mattress maker.
He's the mostly "likely lad"...Seaforth one is not him.
Did he go away to sea??
When Geo A married Esther what was his occupation please?
I could look in 1911 Directory.
Good luck Dot

Hi Tina
Thanks for the look up.

Wish I could find George and Sarahs marriage.

George A was a Carter when he married Esther. They were married in 1908 at St Aidans.

His father was George--a Carter and George A lived at 94 Lambeth Rd.

The witnesses were John A Smith--brother and Ellen Elizabeth Smith--maybe brothers wife?

Not sure about the Spring Mattress Maker though.

Hi Dot..

Free BMD have covered late 1870's early 1880's and no Smith - Taylor marriage.. which is odd, maybe she was married before briefly..cant even find a match for that idea..

Can go right back with George Smith b Lewkner Oxfordshire father Thomas a Water Cress Grower and Beer Seller b Lewkner 1809 mother Ellen b Portcombe Oxforshire 1815..All his brothers were Water Cress Growers..no wonder he got away haaaaaaaaaaaaa watching Cress grow..

Sarah is another story

Hi Collette, just saw your post for Dot. I live in a village close to Lewknor and would say that the other village is Postcombe, not far from Thame, there were Watercress growers all around especially in the Ewelme area, if any info wanted or pics of the area perhaps can help, cheers L.B

Thanks to all for the info and ideas.

It seems to me that they were probably married between 1876---if Sarah was actually born in 1860 and 1881 as they are on the 1881 census.
I assume that they may have been married in the Manchester area.

This should be a lesson to me to stop offering to "do" someones family history!!!!!
Can't find Adam Anderson.
The Forans are born in Ireland, so am stuck there.
If I could find George A Smith and Sarah Taylors marriage I might be able to pin down the Taylors.
The funny thing is that out of all of them---the Smiths are traceable quite a way back.
(I love watercress--actually I think it is mustard and cress I like better---on an egg butty!!!I remember growing cress in school on a piece of blotting paper!)

Liverbird---if you are in Lewknor, I would love a couple of photos. If you can get them, I could pm you with my email adress.

Hi LB
On the 1861 census, the Smith family are living at Sheep Brook. It seems to be next or near to Nethercott House.
If you are able to find any info or photos---I would be very happy.
Thanks, Dorothy

Hi Dot, please do the p.m and I will try for you. Is Nethercott House and Sheepbrook shown as being in the village, the old village is still there with church, pub etc same for Postcombe, but in Lewknor's case the main road now sweeps past taking traffic to the motorway M40, so hope the bit you want was not taken for that, in reality it should have been avoided, if it is shown on the 1861 in the village then we might be lucky. Look forward to hearing from you. :D L.b

Hi dont think we can guess on Sarah's family we need her fathers name.. and looking around i am starting to wonder if they married..

We know John wasnt the name of George's dad so maybe Sarah's.

I too would have thought they married in Manchester area.. looks like George ended up there maybe looking for work..Sarah being already from there..maybe one of Georges sisters married and moved to Manchester..

I am gonna look into that..

Hi Dot, thanks for your e.mail address. just warning you that I have found a website for the village loads of info so will send it via their e.mail link. and some photos I have taken. Also have had a lovely couple of hours going around the villages, pub and church just asking a couple of pointers and no one knew of Sheep Brook every one thought it was water perhaps one of the streams no longer recognised, I had learned that Nethercott House had burnt down in 1871 I believe, but on driving through I found a lane (dead end) of the same name and went down only to find a conversion of the barn that had belonged to it, and the young lady asked me in when she knew what I was looking for and she pointed me straight to the family home of the Smith's, Sheep Brook is the actual name of the cottage and it still stands in a lovely setting. The water cress beds in the village are now allotments but the streams that fed them are still running (cress will only grow in clear running water) and one does still run through the grounds at the side of Sheep Brook. Where he was a beer seller I dont know there were only 2 pubs in the village, one still going. I would guess that the church records which would now be with Oxfordshire record office would hold entries for the family. As there is no church in Postcombe, St Margaret's, Lewknor ( I believe formerly called St Mary's) is the one that would have been used I guess as in Ellen's case marrying some one from the village, which are approx 2 plus mile from each other. If your friend would like any other info let me know, I have had a good time cheers L.B :D

Not sure if this is of any use.

NW of Lewknor there's a Manor House and directly north of that there's somerthing that looks like Sheepswash.

Just came across this thread while searching for Sheep Brook, Lewknor. Does anyone have pictures of Sheep Brook? I am descended from Thomas and Ellen's daughter Louisa.

Thanks very much,
