Missing grandparents

Post by jimw1 »

Hi again, during my research I found that my mother, Mary Burl, maiden name, (now deceased) was born in the West Derby Union Workhouse, later Walton Hospital. Her parents John Thomas Burl and Harriet Gregory were married in 1898, and I found them living at separate addresses in the 1901 census, one in Bootle, one in the city. My mother was born in 1906 and was subsequently adopted by someone named Margaret Wilkinson, which surname is the name my mother took. I found her in the 1911 census living with Margaret in Celt Street as her granddaughter, and named on the census as Mary Bearle Gregory. Her mother had another child in 1914. What I can't find is any trace of my mothers parents after 1901 census, not even in the 1911 census, any clues anyone?

Hi Jim,

Do you have a copy of the birth cert of the child born in 1914? I have found the birth registration, there should be an address on the birth cert and of course parents names.

I have looked in 1914 Liverpool Directory, but there is only a Charles Burl listed.

Jim,

I noticed on the 1901 census that there was a son George with his mum and the Gregory family, age 2

I have found army papers WW1 for a George Burl born 23rd Aug 1898 Liverpool, address was 38 Prospect Street Liverpool, his next of kin was his father John, I don't know if there is a connection but maybe worth keeping in mind.

Hi Jim,
It might be very significant that in the 1901 census Harriet is living with her widowed mother and a child George born in 1899. Did they marry because Harriet was pregnant then split up? And where is George in 1911?

It is possible that Harriet was not actually an inmate of the workhouse when Mary was born, but in the workhouse infirmary. Usually that was the only hospital available to the working class. The admittance/discharge records may be available in the LRO.

May be a red herring but there is a Mr and Mrs Burl, no names/ages given, on the manifest of the Osterley that sailed from London for Sydney on the 15th of January 1914.

Hi Jim :)
A warm welcome from downunder.
Did you know that in 1911 Gores/Kellys at No. 36 Prospect St (no number 38 listed) is a James Jennions foreman rigger.
Isn't that a surname in another post of yours??
What an interesting situation about your Mum?
Wilkinson grannie must come from her Dad's side of the family.

Hi all, thanks for your replies, Jan, I only have my mother's birth cert.
Tina, Jennions is not one of the names I am looking for.
My Mother eventually ended up living with Margaret Wilkinson's daughter, Elizabeth, who's fathers name, George Wilkinson, appears on my mothers wedding cert.
Harriet Burl's birth of 1914 was a son called Joseph, and I can find a Joseph Burl getting married in 1934. It all gets quite complicated, so I think I will leave things as they are.
Once again, thanks

Jim W.

Post by dickiesam »

Hi,
Coincidentally! As well as that marriage DoeDoe found in Lancs bmd:
1935 - Dec qtr - Joseph Burl married Mary Howey reg office
There's this one on FreeBMD:
Marriages Jun 1935:
Burl, Harriet to Grant, Walter - Surrey N.E. - 2a - 263.

Did they divorce and marry other partners? Big coincidence though!! Worth looking at the marriage certs?

There's a death for a Joseph Burl
born 29/4/1914
in Birmingham 1993.

There are 4 births in Lpool of children to Burl/Howey/Howie.
Won't list as they could still be living.

Jim did say he'd like to leave things as they are so perhaps we should respect his request.

Once again guys, very many thanks for your research. I will most likely come back at a later date when I can get my head around the info that has been dug out.
