74 Wigan Road, Ormskirk

A member of my tree died at 74 Wigan Road, Ormskirk, 1939, he lived in Southport. What was at this address, was it the workhouse building or hospital? He died of bronchitis, his niece, who live in St helens, registered his death.

My 1930s road atlas shows details, and Wigan Road has the Poor Law Institution, a large complex of buildings. It may have changed from workhouse to hospital at some stage, as many did, but I have no details.

Hi

74 Wigan Road Ormskirk was the euphenism for Ormskirk Hospital. The site contained the workhouse and hospital but I'm not sure when it became solely the hopsital. It was all hospital from 1948 but may have been just hospital from a little earlier but I'm not sure.

just reading your messages and have learnt something I didnt know , one of my ancestors has the address on her death cert in 1934 .I always took it as her home address ,so it was a surprise to find out it was a hospital you learn a lot from this site :D

HI

The post about the Union Workhouse Hospital came up on Google. Having just got a death certificate with the hospital as place of death I folled the Hospital.

Ormskirk Inion Workhouse was founded in 1834 by the Ormskirk Board of Gaudians
It became a hospital in 1930 when the then Lancashire County Council started to be responsible for health care. It was called Ormskirk County Hospital.

There are many such institions throughout Lancashire eg Whiston County Hospital.

The Hospital became Ormskirk & District General Hospital when the National health Service took over in-patient health care in 1948.

I was aware of many institions that started of as Workhouses and get the stigma until the 1960s
