Saxony Road 1891, Was there a pub?

Post by erika »

Hi Folks

Hope you are all well and not snowed in

Just wondered if anyone can help me with a name of a pub in Saxony Road.
On the 1891 census I have a family who are publicans. They have been at a different pub throughout each census and I have usually been able to find a name.
RG12, Piece 2990, Folio 90, Page 44

This time no luck :(
The address is 99 Saxony Road. The family name is Baker, but mistranscribed by ancestry as Baken.
Would be very grateful for a name if possible

Cheers

I cannot help with 1891, but in 1909 there was no pub in Saxony Road, according to the City Licensing Book for that year.
Someone with a directory for around 1891 might be more helpful.

Thanks Daggers for looking. Maybe this time they didn't actually live on the premises, but wouldn't have thought that usual then.

Me again...
Have you got them in 1911 census?
Henry is 52, some of the kiddies with them Dorothy 34 etc.
Margt listed as Margaret Kathleen, she's knocked a few years off her age

1901 382 Edge Lane.

1911 Directory Margt still lic vic at the Goat.
It looks like they didn't live on the premises while they ran the pub.

More from the City Licensing Book, 1909:

42 St Andrew Street (The Goat), licensee: Margaret Kathleen Baker (Part Owner). Registered Owner: Henry Baker, 382 Edge Lane. 2 trade entrances in St Andrew St, 1 in Bronte St. 645 sq feet drinking space, 5 rooms for domestic purposes, 1 licensee since 1/1/1900.

The entry is ruled out in ink, but no date shown for the cancellation or non-renewal of the licence. Directories would show roughly when The Goat ceased to be a pub.

382 Edge Lane was not licensed premises.

Hi Tina and Daggers

Thanks for all the info :D

I had found out about The Goat and Margaret Baker. She was Henry's 2nd wife. Henry was there in the 1881 census with his 1st wife and living on the premises. I wonder why they moved out of there and lived in different addresses whilst they were still running the place :?

Seems his sons also were in the licensing trade as I've found them at various locations.

Thanks again
Cheers

Hi Erika
The wife held the license so the hubby could work at another job.
If he was the holder, he couldn't moonlight.
