winwick asylum

I have recently discovered that my husband's aunt died in this asylum in 1929 I know the brief detail can anyone help re the records of in patients her name was Alice Powell and she lived in Hulme in Manchester I can't understand why she was in here and not in the manchester area nearer to home? Would she have had to have been declared insane to be in there? and can I find anything about hber while she was in? I would be grateful for any help on researching this very many thanks Carole

she may not have been insane.... those suffering from post-partum depression, dementia, alzheimers, or any other brain/mental related issue such as a nervous breakdown would have been sent to such an institution to recover.

Welcome aboard!!
I can't seem to find her death in Warrington rego.
My idea was too look for her in 1911, perhaps she may have already been in a home or had a medical problem.
There's an Agnes listed she was 53 yrs of age.

thank you for your replies i.ve been checking today some more revelations in that they buried her in southern cemetery manchester with her dad and i already knew that her husband died in the 14-18 war and was buried in france they were only married just over a year and i thought that this may have pushed over the edge i'm so sad that she died in this place and that she never got to be with fred at the end i'd just like to know if she was ok and not poorly treated thanks all carole

If you google Hospital Records Database you can then search the database for Winwick and it tells you what records have survived. Most are at Cheshire Record Office. However there do not seem to be patient records for the time you want. Often personal records are closed for 100 years.

My great-aunt died in Winwick during the 1940s. To find out more, I wrote to Winwick Hospital and they confirmed that she had indeed there, together with the date. I don't think you will be able to get much more information for a while yet because of the 100-year confidential clause.

I agree with a previous correspondent, it wasn't necessarily for the insane people, it covered severe depression which is what my great-aunt had.

I am a very new member and I am trying to find out about my mother, Margaret Higgins. My brother, John, who died recently, was born on 6th. August 1937 at 1a, Delph Lane, Winwick, I understand that this was the official address for Winwick Hospital. I did not know my mother and would dearly love to find out why she was in that hospital, and later, in Rainhill Hospital for 24 years. I have recently received a letter of permission from the 5 Boroughs Partnership NHS Trust to obtain information about my mother and it is believed this information is held by Liverpool Records Office. I would like to think that it would be worthwhile to visit Liverpool for the express purpose of looking at these records, but on reading earlier posts it seems that either the records are not there or are closed under the 100 year rule. I have no older members of the family to ask. In fact, I am the Older Generation .

Hi and welcome to the forum.

As our Education Officer advises, records may be held at the Cheshire Record Office so it might be a good idea if you were to contact them direct http://www.cheshire.gov.uk/recoff/ they might do a 15 minute search for you to see if what you are looking for is in their files.

It's possible that the letter of permission that you hold might open these records for you, be sure to tell them that you have it and ask their advice.
