Champion family, Liverpool

Post by Caroline »

Hi all
I am new to this board, so a big hello!

I have just started researching the Champion family, which is my mum's side of the family.

My grandad was William, his father was Arthur Thomas, and his father was Arthur Thomas.

If anybody knew of the family, who were based mostly around south Liverpool (Mill St, Park Rd, Wolfe St, Caryl Gardens, Copperfield St, King Gardens, etc) please do get in touch.

Best wishes

Hello Caroline and welcome to the forum. Could you give us any dates like births, marriages and deaths or even the year for events related to the ancestors you mention in your post. We have to know where to start looking.
All the best,

Thanks for the warm welcome all :)

Thanks for the look ups Tina! Most appreciated.
I think that is the Arthur Thomas I am looking for.

William Champion: born 1920 , Tox Park (my grandad)

Arthur Thomas Champion: born 1873, West Derby (My great grandad)

Arthur Thomas Champion: born 1848, Gloucestershire (my great great grandad)

Thomas Champion: born around 1805 , Chichester, Sussex (my great great great grandad).

I hope it's all right! I think up to my gt gt grandad it's fine.
I am 80% sure about Thomas.

I am waiting for a marriage cert at the moment of my gt gt grandad, so hopefully this should confirm some things.

There is a child of Arthur Thomas ( gt gt grandad) who was named Hercules! It has been quite easy to trace him because of his unusual name.
I am fairly sure he died around 1942 in Bootle/Seaforth.

Hi Tina
Thanks so much for all of your help.

I did notice that Estington mistake, there were a few others dotted around the entries that I found too, and have reported.

I have got Hester in service,
I also saw that Lenden/Campion marriage, and I received the marriage cert yesterday.
Do you think I am on the right track with this one?
Because of the Campion name on the cert, and no mention of Champion.

Also, Arthur's father is listed as James on the cert, and not Thomas as I thought.
Hmmmm.

It would be easier if you provided the full details from the certificate ie date and place, ages and occupations for both bride and groom as well as both parents. Also who were the witnesses?

Every little bit of information helps to look around a subject.

Thanks for all of your help so far, what with Christmas, I have mislaid the certificate! But will type out all of the details when I can find it.

I wonder if anybody could help with locating where Hercules James Champion was buried?

I don't know where to start!

I would get the birth certificate of either Hercules or the son Arthur. This will give you the mother's maiden name and will prove or disprove whether you have the correct marriage certificate.

For Hercules burial place I would think Bootle Cemetery would be a possibility

You need to contact Thornton Crematorium as they hold the records. They probably will want a date of death but they may have a look with just a quarter and a year

Hi all,

Thanks for all of your help so far with my research.

I have come across one of my ancestors (Elizabeth Champion) working at Hunts Cross House on Speke Road in 1911, as a domestic.

Would anyone happen to know where the house was at all?

If you have downloaded the image from the 1911 census you should also be able to view the Enumerator's description page which should tell you the route he took and may be able to pinpoint the actual house by any turnings he took.

Try www.maps.google.co.uk and look up Speke Road choose the Woolton entry, but things will look very different now.

Hi Caroline,

I have looked in the 1911 directory and there are two Speke Roads listed, one in Garston but the one in Woolton has John L Evans listed at Hunts Cross House, it was between Stewart Avenue and Higher Road Halewood if that is of any help.

Clarke, McLeod, Pendleton (Liverpool and I.O.M.) Coltham, Cowley, Nickson, Huyton, Grisdale, Quirk, Knowles, Street, Howard. Knubley.

Thanks for this.

I found Hunts Cross House on an old map, it was directly opposite the Hunts Cross Hotel.
Now sadly gone.

Also, I had a reply back from Thornton, and they do not have a record of Hercules burial at all.

I wonder where else he would be buried if he died in Bootle/Seaforth?

Was he by any chance RC? If so Ford Cemetery is a possibility, details in the Liverpool Record Office.

Is your Hercules J Champion the one who on lancashirebmd marries Catherine J Painton in 1894 at St Michaels Toxteth Park? If so and there's a Toxteth connection and apparently C of E maybe he's in Toxteth cemetery?
