HASLAM
HASLAM
I am researching the name John HASLAM, married to Elizabeth approx 1830. I believe John was a farmer in the Warrington area. I cannot trace when John died but know he had a pub in Warrington called the Eagle & Child on Bridge Street in the 1830s. Elizabeth died in Hatton in 1887. Any suggestions as to where these people might be buried?
Hi,
Any idea if he appears in the 1841 or subsequent census returns? Just to give an idea of possible death dates?
A quick look at the lan-opc site between 1830 - 1890 gives one burial near to/in Warrington at Sankey Chapel, Great Sankey, Nr. Warrington on 5th March 1837 for John Haslem age 29 - 'of Warrington'.
There are, though, a total of 52 burials for a John Haslam listed in Lancashire on this site and these records are still being transcribed so are not complete.
St. Elphins, Warrington Parish Church has burials between 1813-1854 on the site and for St Mary's, Gt Sankey between 1735-1878.
Hope this helps.

Many thanks for your helpful reply.
John does not appear in the 1841 census so I am sure he must have died between his third child being born in 1835 and before the commencement of official records in 1837. I have searched the parish records for St Elphins and didn't find anything. However, your suggestion of Gt Sankey sounds as if he is the one I'm seeking. I don't know the Warrington area and this makes it difficult to make assumptions. Perhaps his widow, Elizabeth who died in 1887 may be buried in Gt Sankey, too.

Hi Patricia,
I work round the corner so could check that for you after work one day - if it ever stops raining!
If you check out www.lan-opc.org.uk you may find other family details that could help you.
I'll be in touch when I've checked out the graves.
Regards

Thank you so much for your offer. I look forward to hearing from you again at your convenience.
The lan-opr site has now given me John's likely date of baptism (5th July 1807) and parents' names (John & Mary). In the burials, there is also a John and a Mary who lived at Latchford, who could also be connected.
Do you know whether or not the LDS films give more details than appear on the opr site? If so, I could order them at a centre in Leeds.

Hi Patricia,
Well I went to St Mary's today but found no Haslem gravestones. Most of them have been removed probably because of decay, with some of them laid flat as paving stones. Only the bigger memorials remain really.
However there is a graveyard just down the road which has lots of stones and the grounds are not attached to a church, the nearest being St Mary's so that could be worth a look some time.
There is also an M.I. publication for St Mary's at the library so I'll give that a look when I'm next in. (I have some of my own lot to look for so its no bother)
I'm not sure what is recorded on the lds films but I presume its a copy of the register so will have more content than their online entries. I have seen film where the entry is also on the lan-opr site and the Lancashire site records all that appears in the register, which is often different amounts depending on who by or when it was recorded. The older the record, the less detail is given generally - and content differs between churches.

Hi Patricia,
Not much to report I'm afraid.
The M.I's for St Mary's at Sankey give only one Haslem and that is Frank Haslam, Corporal, who is mentioned in the memorial for WW1.
Thats not to say there was no stone, or that John wasn't buried there just there was no inscription found when those in the book were transcribed.
There's quite a good picture of the church on the lan-opc site.
Good luck in your searches.
