Marriage help request

Post by Jamie79 »

I wonder if I could be very cheeky and ask for a hand with a marriage look-up please. The problem is I don't have a huge amount of detail. I've checked Lancs BMD and Ancestry.co.uk but not found anything that matches in any solid fashion.

I'm looking to find details of the marriage of one JEAN STEWART, daughter of JOHN STEWART on August 16th 1963. I am making an educated guess that the wedding took place in Liverpool as this was where these relatives of mine originated, but I cannot be 100% sure. The other problem is that I have no idea of the groom's name, other than a stab at the surname Williamson based on an Ancestry hit.

John Stewart was the brother of my great grandfather Dugald Stewart and details of their immediate family are more than a little tricky to trace. I've managed to find some records of Dugald's earlier life with help from kind souls on this forum in the past, but John and another brother Archibald are proving far harder to pin down!

Any help or advice would be most welcome. Not been on in a while, but have had some recent luck with a distant cousin discovering me through Ancestry.co.uk and imparting some brilliant tales and info on my Morgan descendants of Liverpool, Dublin and beyond.

Thanks for your time folks, all assistance much appreciated as always!

Stewart marriage

Post by dickiesam »

Hi,
There were 5 Jean Stewart marriages in England and Wales in the Sept qtr of 1963.

1) Jean Stewart to Jones in Hatfield [4b - 159];
2) Jean Stewart to Kibson in Durham SE [1A - 1613];
3) Jean D S Stewart to Williamson in Liverpool North [10D - 374];
4) Jean E Stewart to Swallow in Ealing [5E - 407];
5) Jean I Stewart to Whittaker in West Cheshire [10A - 1774];

I think you have to take a chance and apply for a cert. If you specify her father's name, and possibly the date of the marriage, as a Reference Checking Point and the reference isn't the right one, the GRO will only charge you £4 for the search instead of £7 for a wrong cert.
Good luck,
Dickiesam

I've amended the heading of your post to take out the works "look up". Unfortunately without a church being known, there would be nowhere for our members to look.

Please don't post any results of this search as the people concerned are likely to be still living.

Dickiesam's advice is good, and I would alternatively suggest that you contact the Liverpool Register Office http://www.liverpool.gov.uk/registrars_office/index.asp and see if they will tell you if that marriage in Liverpool has the correct father.

Even if you have to write in to make your request, together with cheque, they are sometimes more lenient over payment for a non productive search than the GRO are, although the waiting time is considerably longer.
