Ed Officer

I also think that is the probable scenario, and I suppose we will never know the truth of it.

I have been looking for a James McQuair who was a ships steward, the McQuair name seems mostly confined to the West Derby area. I have found a marriage for a James Backie McQuair in 1906 at St Augustine's Everton, to Alice Joy, but his occupation is down as Auctioneer. However as the family say that Augusta Helena herself was a stewardess and James McQuair is a ships steward on the birth certificate for John James McQuair, she could have met him on board ship and he could be from anywhere in the world.

I think we will just have to put this to bed and I would like to thank everyone for their interest and help on behalf of my friend. She is delighted with the information I have gained for her.

Hi All,

Excuse me for butting in! Augusta Helena Zerega, Davis, was my great grandmother. The theory that her husband went missing and then RETURNED doesnt work. Her eldest daughetr Augusta Mary apparently made a disparaging remark at HIS funeral, what that was is unknown, but it was sufficient for her to be ostracised by the rest of the family. This state of affairs continued until my Grandmother, Emily Cross was dying from cancer, Augusta Mary (Gussie) was the ONLY member of her maternal family that visited her in her last days. This seems to suggest (a) yes he had died. (b) That he died in this country & Augusta Helena DID know he was dead, and at that time the family new how, where and when his death occurred and place of burial. This knowledge is now lost and I have spent ten years tracing thie Davis and Zerega families, the Zeregas I have traced back to one Francisco Zerega to the eighteenth century in Clivari,Genoa. Helenas mother is unknown and I think will remain so.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

We are pleased you butted in! It's lovely to have an update on a family we've been trying to find from another descendant and I hope Eileen will be able to put you in touch with a new relative.

Good luck with your researches.

Thanks Stowbridge for your input, I have only been helping a friend who is the grand-daughter of Augusta Mary Davis. The information she has was very sparse but as she is over 80 she wanted to see if she could find what had really happened.

I have sent you a PM and if you wish to get in touch with her I can arrange that for you.
