Bay Street Liverpool 1863

Post by dianeb »

Can anyone help? Has anyone heard of a Bay Street in Liverpool in 1863? A letter was sent home from a young domestic servant saying "write to me c/o Mrs Lloyd at No 1 Bay Street Liverpool".
I've tried but I can't find it anywhere.
Thanks
Dianeb

Hello Dianeb.
Searched for a Bay St in my Gores 1860 directory but it was not listed .

Checked for a Mrs Lloyd, found living off Tithebarn St, at 1 KEY St was a Margaret Lioyd, no occupation recorded

Is it possible the hand writting is not too clear or is 1 KEY St and Margaret Lloyd just a coincident .

Many thanks to everyone for your help - the query is from a friend in our local fhs here in Sheffield - he thought I could help with my Liverpool family connections. The ancestor who wrote the letter was Welsh and she wrote it in Welsh - he has had it translated - so I'll pass on your ideas 'cos it could point to a mis-translation or mis-reading or a misunderstanding by the young woman of how to spell English names.
many thanks again

Further to previous posts my friend has e-mailed a scanned copy of the letter - Colette's suggestion of Ray Street looks a real possibility - where exactly was/is Ray Street?
many thanks

The 1881 census gives the Enumerator's Walk for District 21 Dale Street as

"The whole of Ray Street, togethere with Cellars and Courts.
Part of Prussia Street, both sides from Plumb Street to Highfield Street, including Courts.
The whole of Maidens Green, Crown Court and Courts"

If you use googlemaps and search for Prussia Street you will find it just off Pall Mall which runs between Leeds Street and Tithebarn Street.
