James Lawrenson of Earle Road, died 8 Aug 1916

Post by daggers »

On another forum a researcher is asking if anyone knows of a war memorial in Liverpool which includes the name of Private James Lawrenson, 1/5th Battalion, the King's Liverpool Regiment. He died in August 1916 and his name is on the memorial to the missing, with no known grave, at Thiepval, Somme. His parents were Mr G.E. and Mrs Ruth Lawrenson of 55 Timpson Road, Earle Road, Liverpool, according to the War Graves Commission.
It has already been confirmed that the name is not on the Town Hall Roll of Honour or St Bridget's, Bagot Street.
Any clues, anyone, please?

Hi Daggers
I've only just found your post through "search" looking for something in Wavertree.
(I was baptised at St Biddies!)
There was St Dunstan's C of E & St Hughs R.C also in Earle Rd.
There may be a Roll of Honour in Wavertree Town Hall?
The family are listed as Laurenson in 1901 at 17 Picton Rd which was Edge Hill end near Botanic Gardens.
Perhaps James is remembered in the church where he was baptised?
His Dad came from Edge Hill & his Mum from Tockie.
1891 they were in Ono St (OMG I know this like the back of my hand!!)
Near W'tree station off Wellington Rd.
The parish would have been St Mary's.
I know you like detail Daggers
Parents marriage listed LAWRINSON George Edward to Ruth Ashcroft
Tox Park 1889 in Free BMD & in Lancs BMD he's LANKINSON  at St Cleopas.
That's another church worth looking into?
(Off topic, when my Garston mates were here in March, I helped with their family tree, I pronounced the church as CLEO - PASS...they said it's CLE--OPUS)
Probably not of much help Daggers, perhaps our famous crew will pick this up :D

That's a huge amount of research for me to take in - thank you for it all. I will pass it on the the original asker [is that a word?] and see if it helps.

By the way Ono St was just the other side of the railway fom my g-gfather's mill!
We have the same problem with Cleopas in the family. Others think there was a St Cleopa, and bring in a stray apostrophe.
Wavertree Town Hall has been a pub for years, so it would be very fortunate if a memorial lasted.

:D

I was just reading the post and it brought back memories for me, I was born in Toxteth and went to St Cleopas school, the church was right next to it in Beresford Road.

Both long gone now, I wish we had the Toxteth.net site still on line, there was a great photo of the church on there, but I may still have it in my collection somewhere.

Thanks Daggers :)
When we walked to Sunday School at the Mission in Wellie Road, just after the bridge on the left our "Miss" told us there had been a mill there.
She told us every Sunday!!
So right Jan about Tockie site and such a pity.
I hope you find the photos.
How did you pronounce St Cleopas please?

Cheers
Tina :) :)

The Sunday School building in Wellie Rd is still there as a chapel but now under the Liverpool City Mission. It was founded by my ggf when the numbers outgrew the mill house and one of his 6 daughters was the superintendent of the S/school until her death in 1945 aged 76.
Small world indeed!
The Mystery now has an athletics track in the corner behind the old baths & library, with grandstand etc. and you probably know that Wavertree station disappeared years ago.
D
PS I forgot to say that I have posted your info on Lawrenson to the original enquirer who should be most grateful, as I am.

That's amazing Daggers about the Mission!!
It was Miss Norman who took us, she worked all her life in the Lune Laundry, never married, looked after her old mother.
From the front door of the Mission, looking across to the right was the doorstep of the house my family lived in before I was born.
That was all that was left after the bombing.
My poor Ma was on the buses with George Harrison's Dad, walking in front of the bus with her lamp & saw Wellie Rd had gone.
My grannie would not go to the shelter but this night she did...
She was alive & my brother too.
My poor Ma didn't know until nearly midnight.
Can't even begin to imagine life back then.
I hope your "asker" gets something to chew on with my posts.
Always GR8 to "talk" to you D :D

You weren't meant to see that - it was derelict, lying where it fell and none were missing on top!

Thanks so much Daggers, I'll treasure this photo :D
Do you see the round ball on top of a pillar far left?, the little opening led down the back to the Sunday School Room.
We were only allowed into the main church for special services e.g Harvest Festival.
Many thanks for lovely pm, much appreciated :)
