Re Burnt Doc WW1

Hi

Just wondering if when looking for a service record of a WW1 soldier on Ancestry and you see load with the surname you are looking for.. how can it be that yours is missing.. i know a percentage were burnt.. but i would have thought certain letters were more burnt than others..
So what i mean is if theres loads with the surname you need wouldnt yours be ok..

This is so frustrating, I have come up with the same problem for quite a few relllies even though there are ones with the same name in the same area. Have you tried medal cards, sometimes they are available.

Hi hun yes i have his medal roll..

Its frustrating because he was in the Army from at least 1900 cant find him in 1901 but he married in Warwickshire 1904 and he was a Sergeant in Royal Warwks Reg even then so he had a long career in the Army.till he was killed in 1917.

The 1911 helped as i found he had 3 kids.. his wife is in the Barracks in Warwick but he isn't there so he must be away.

His name Edward Joseph Pratt born 1875 Stoneleigh Warwickshire.. sometimes he puts down Westwood as its an area in Stoneleigh

I cant even find what happened to his kids later on who they married or what happened to them etc..

Charles Edward Pratt b Warwick 1906

Emily Doris M Pratt b Warwick 1908

I would love to find their marriages..

Edward Joseph Pratt was my Great Grandads youngest brother..

Are you positive there are none born after 1911 where the mother's name is on the indexes? What is the mother's name? perhaps she married again and moved, maybe changing the childrens names.

Assuming they kept the same names, there is only one marriage for an Emily D Pratt and that's in Hampstead, Middlesex Q4 1930 to Charles E Dickens.

There is an entry for Marjory E in Edmonton Middlesex, assuming that they did move to London, however, there are more for this name in other places also.

Pity the LMA images only to up to 1920, however it could be worth looking for the mother on there - what was her name?

Edward could have been posted to London.. then come back to Warwickshire...they actualy married in MERIDEN which is very close to were they both came from Foleshill is close too..

On their marriage cert Edward was living in Budbrook no address and Ellen was in Allesley no address..she was a School Teacher in Kenilworth according to a notice of Edwards death in a Kenilworth newspaper.. he was an Attendance Officer for a school in Foleshill..must have been before he joined the Army

so i have 5 possible kids now...

This is why i needed his WW1 Service record so much

as it would have given me all the names of his kids an an address..I have gone through all of Edward Joseph's siblings..

One Mary Elizabeth Pratt married Charles Tew and moved to Leamington and ran a pub she had two sons and i thought alot of hard work found the only daughter to one of those sons she told me via letter that her father died before she was born.. and her mother died two years later so she was brought up by her mums mum.. very sad.. but she sent me a lovely photo of her parents weddings.. she knew nothing of any of the Pratts..

One Walter George Pratt was in an Institution in Warwick in 1911 single

One Jane died aged 33 in 1900 no marriage

One Emily Pratt married a Samuel Alan Kilvert 1906 Warwick



1911 the are in 3 Cradley Road Cradley Heath Staffs

Emily b 1872 Kenilworth
Dau Irene b 1908 Rowley Regis (MARY IRENE)

One Charles Pratt married his first cousin and brought her to Liverpool he was a Police Constable for 25 years in Liverpool..her name was Janet Lee cant see any kids for them ..

Last one i know all about Arthur Henry Pratt my Great Grandad..

So its only Samuel Allan Kilvert & Emily and Edward Joseph Pratt & Ellen i am struggling with to find Descendants.. theres enough kids to plough through..

I havent asked for help on this one as i wnated to do it myself.. but feel its time to pull in some favors...

Just found 1932 Staffs Directory Mrs Emily Kilvert Tobacconist 132 High Street & Cradley Road


I am so happy shes 60 years old selling fags in her own shop..so glad she lived to a good age

Gonna see can i get a photo of the high street now haaaaaaaaaaaa

Could sort of tentatively work through at least one - Emily D Pratt to a Charles E Dickens in Hampstead London 1930 and although they are all registered in different districts of London, there are four possible children spaced two years apart.

No marriages for Mary Ellen on the LMA but then it does only go up to 1921.

I tried to do a search for a Thoms Williams and I could not get any one with the surname Williams to come up. So I tried John Smith and got no matches.

However if you scroll down to the alphabetical listing a - z and click on.

I was able to get 575000 images. Looking through these images randomly I found the Williams surname. I also came across the surname Symonds etc etc.

So from this I can assume that all the digitised images have been uploaded, however the surnames have not been added into the database so it wil be a case of looking through these images until you find the surname you are looking for. I assume this goes for the name Smith. I am going to send a e.mail to Ancestry and ask for an explanation.

If he continued to serve after 1921 his records wouldn't have been released by the Ministry of Defence so Ancestry won't have them.

I know it's a long shot, but you could write to the MOD and ask, under the Freedom of Information Act, if they have his records. If they have they are obliged to tell you and will charge £30 for a copy.

As for the burnt records, I have not worked out how they were ordered when the bomb hit but it probably wasn't alphbetically.
