I have just "located" my g grandfathers details of his death.
He died 10th april 1933
On the 1911 census which i have just purchased a copy of this morning he resides at 31 Riding Street Southport.
Could anyone tell me where that was, what type of housing etc.
My grandfather was A retired Chief Inspector of Police Dewsbury. who on retiring was said to have gone to St Annes but he definately was at Riding Street in the 1911.
I have no details as to where he may be buried any suggestions how to locate , in view of visiting the grave. Would there have been lots of churches around?
Thank you from Helen
Ridings Street Southport
Hi and welcome to the forum.
You say he was definitely in Southport in 1911, but that's quite a long time before 1933 when he died, was this also in Southport?
Although I don't know the road, Riding Street is still there in Southport now, not far away from the main Lord Street, so I suspect the buildings will still be the same - pity it's not on the street view on google. There are people on this forum who will know it better than I do and I suspect it won't be too long before you get a better answer.
If you wanted to know more about his career there may be records available in the Lancashire Record Office, Preston.

If your g grandfather was buried in Southport the most likely place for him to be buried is in Duke Street Cemetery.
If you contact Southport Crematorium they hold theregisters for Duke Street Cemetery, Birkdale Cemetery and the Crematorium and as you have the date of death will be able to tell you if he is buried there, the grave reference and if there is a headstone. They will also (for a charge) tell you who else is in the grave.

It is also possible that there was a death notice in the local paper the Southport Visiter. That is on film in Southport Library. If you tell me the gentleman's name I will have a quick look and see if there is any mention of him.
It's very likely that 31 Riding Street still exists as it is a street of Victorian properties by the railway line. I shall have a look and get back to you

31 Riding Street Southport is still there. It's a Victorian semi probably 3 bedrooms the sort with front door into narrow hall and stairs ahead with a front room with a bay window. Not been inside guessing but that's what it looks like and it'll back onto the railway line from Southport to Liverpool.
