John Lester, Everton Barman/Publican
John Lester, Everton Barman/Publican
Last year I asked for some help in trying to track my great grandfather, John lester and what happened to him in later life. I am still looking.
john lester was born in 1869/70 in Woolton. He appears to have been given up by his family and appears in the 1871 census as a nurse child.
I now have copies of his son's marriages in 1929 and 1930 in which he is listed as deceased. One of them states his occupation as Licensee
I have a birth certificate for my great Aunt in 1906 in which he is listed as a publican.
I Have a photograph of him taken outside a pub. On the wall above his head there is a street sign, "Rothwell Street".
In 1911 the census have the family living in 1 Monk Street, However, he has been struck out at the bottom and the old address is struck out.
I have searched the death lists from 1911 to 1930 and can find no reference to him.
I was wondering. If he was a licencee would there be a reference to him in any record of publicans etc?
Does anyone have any list of pubs on Rothwell Street, ( I assume in Everton) at which he worked?
Has anyone any ideas of how I can track his death. Any help will be most gratefully recieved.

Hi Ian
I think 1 Monk St was on the corner of Friar St so maybe confusion with the enumerator when doing the census.. 1900 Mrs Isabella Guthrie was there and again 1911 shes still there..Friar St isnt in the 1911 directory.. where they still there on daughters birth cert 1906 ???
I have pubs books upstairs so first thing i will get the one for Everton out and see what pubs were on Rothwell St for you..he sounds like my Great Grandad worked his way up as a Barman then manager then licencee

Yes I have them living in Friar Steet in 1901. However in 1906 They are in 7 Thorndale Street.
In the 1911 census, what I find interesting is that John Lester had filled in the bottom of the census return with an address of 15 Hamilton Street. This is then crossed out and Isabella Guthrie's (John's mother in law)name is written over the top and the address of 1 Monk Street where Isabella and the family lived until, my great grandma moved to 12 Varthern Street in Anfield. She dided there in 1955.
I am not sure whether John Lester did a runner, or if he died

In the City of Liverpool Licensing Report Book for 1909 there is one pub in Rothwell Street: no. 18, with no name shown. It had a full licence, the manager was Fredk Roberts, the owners Bents Brewery Co Ltd., it was in B police division. There had been 7 licensees between 1 Jan 1900 and 1909. A later note shows that the licence was allowed to lapse in 1925.
There may be similar details for other years in the Liverpool Record Office.

Hi
I know he has born Liverpool as a babe then later when hes older hes born Woolton.. HOW DOES HE KNOW where he was born unless someone has told him.
Lets say his mother died and left two babies him and this Sarah E who was the other nurse child born Liverpool in Manchester 1871..Dad couldnt cope so had to let them go to these woman who were on a list to take in babies..
I think we need to find both kids in 1881 and try to find the Wrights and Ann Bennett to see did they stay with these families or move on..
