Instructions received thank you. I'll print them out and work through. The scanned photo is really too dark, lacks detail. My Aunt is posting the original photo to me tomorrow and I should receive by Monday hopefully. She has also found two small British medals which I've asked her to describe and I'll add this as well. Have been checking some shipping lists in the name of Tuttle and Barlow but as yet no luck. Checked Australian Voter Lists and found him in Condobolin (country NSW) in 1936 as James Robert Barlow. My Aunt knew he had lived in this country town and he was described as living at the Commercial Hotel as a Barman/Waiter. So from 1919 in Liverpool, England, ended up in 1936 in Condobolin, NSW - a gap of 17 years. The marriage you've suggested is definitely a possibility and will be investigated in more detail. Going to get some certificates now we know the right name.
Certificates can run away with your money and in this post there have been a few births and marriages that you will need.
Much of the time we can't help with Cheshire but there is a possibility that somebody visiting the Liverpool Record Office would be willing to look up a baptism or marriage in Liverpool if the church and dates are known. I know there were a couple in St Matthews.
If you post a separate request for a look up if somebody is going and has the time spare from their own research, they may be willing to check the details for you. Then perhaps your money might be spent on the certificates out of the area.

JAMES ROBERT BARLOW
Thank you again. The family resources to gain inside information are very limited. He died a long time ago and apart from his 1 daughter there is only 1 other daughter from my grandmother's first marriage still alive. She was only a child at the time he first appeared and doesn't remember much at all.

Sandra,
Sorry to ask, but what was his occupation? Apart from being a soldier, was there an occupation on his marriage cert or daughters birth cert if you have them?

Hopefully this is the photo I want to download!!
With regard to medals my Aunt has 2 Ribbons on Metal Bar with Brooch Pin to attach to uniform.
On front of 1st Medal: Figure (head) of King George V. On Back: Figure on Horse & Dates 1914-1919.
2nd Medal - Front: Full Lenth Winged Figure. On Back: The words "The Great War for Civilisation 1914-1919".
As regards his occupation, on the Marriage Certificate (1940) he is listed as "Soldier". My Aunt was born in 1943, he was still a Soldier then. Enlisted in Australian Army.
That picture has turned out well and doesn't he look grand!

The medals are the British War Medal (top right in my Avatar) and the Victory Medal (bottom left in my Avatar) and will have the regimental number, rank, initial, surname and regiment impressed on the rim.

We have checked the medals and they do appear as depicted on the Avatar. It looks like they may be miniatures (only the size of an Australian 5 cent piece). They do not have any writing on the rim or the edge.
Also a big thank you to Holly for looking up the 2 marriages. These are the people we are looking for. You have all progressed this line a long way and solved quite a number of puzzles. Thank you.

Hi again. It's been a while since I posted a query re James Robert Barlow who turned out to be Robert Tuttle but we have been obtaining certs. and putting together this "mystery" man. Ed Officer put forward a marriage between Robert Tuttle and Hannah Roberts (Robson) 1922 Birkenhead Civil Marriage. This cert. has just come and it is my Aunt's father, his father, Richard, is the witness. Is there any way we can find out if he was divorced or if Hannah died before he came to Australia? Were there any children from this marriage? First mention of RT in Aust. was 1930 and he married my grandmother in 1940. Maybe he just did a runner, this would explain the name change!!!
Thank you again for all your previous answers. Sandra.

Hi Sandra
Good to hear from you again.
What a tangled story!
I'm guessing the father Richard witness at the wedding was a Tuttle?
Does it give any more info, e.g his occupation.
Can you list the addresses also any other witness.
Many thanks and good luck.

I hope this is allowed on the site, I have copied a portion on the attestation papers for Robert Tuttle. (the last number on the longer number is a 3, I missed it off!
