D Shannon Remembrance

I have been trying to confirm that the following soldier, who appears in the Liverpool Town Hall, Hall of Remembrance, is my Grandfather.

Shannon Pte D, Border Regiment (1st Batt)-Panel 42

In the CWGC site I have found,
Private D Shannon
203307, 1st Bn., Border Regiment
who died on 4th October 1917
This seems to be the same person as the one named in the Town Hall, and is the only D Shannon on the CWGC site.

I have been told that neither the Town Hall nor LIVRO have any records of next of kin or address.

The family story is that my Grandfather had joined up in 1915 as a driver, with2/3rd West Lancashire Brigade RFA, but later discharged on medical grounds. I have copies of his service records for this period. I understand that because he got fed up with being accused of being a coward he rejoined the army and was killed in action.

I have been in touch with The Border Regiment but they have no records, but they assume that the information is for the same man. I also have the medals record for D Shannon of the Border Regiment.

However, I would like to have positive confirmation if possible. Is there anywhere else I could look, would a death certificate give details of next of kin or address?

203307 Pte David Shannon is entitled to a British War and Victory medal. He did not therefore serve overseas in 1915-hence no star entitlement. It would be interesting to know what his service papers say to try and tie in some of the lose ends.

Why do you believe this "D Shannon" is your grandfather?

Mark Abbot, thank you for your prompt reply and for filling in the fact that my Grandfather didn't leave the country in his first period of service. The papers I have show that he was only in the army from May 1915 to August 1915, so it looks as if he never got past his training period. These papers also give his next of kin and address which I can confirm.
The reason I think the D Shannon in the Liverpool Town Hall is my Grandfather is from what I have been told by the family (unfortunately, all dead now), and the fact that he is the only D Shannon from Liverpool that I can find.
Please let me know what further details I can provide.

On the Soldiers died in the Great War on Ancestry the chritian name of D Shannon is given as David. It also says he was born in Liverpool and resided in Liverpool.

Have you looked in the paper of the time as that may well list family names in an death notice?

The National Archives index to medal cards shows only one D. Shannon in the Border Regiment, first name David, number 203307. There are other Shannons in that regiment with different initials.
It all seems to tie up.

I have your Private D. Shannon in my newspaper index.

Its states

"Pte. D. Shannon Border Regt. killed in action on Oct 4th, aged 34 years, leaves a widow and six children at either 16 or 26 Fernie STreet Dingle. He was previously employed by Elder Dempster and Co, dock department."
