I wonder how accurate we can assume that is!!

Hi

Charles Almond Haswell is the son of Charles & Ann

He married Mary Hughes St Martin Chester 1828. they had one son Johnathan born 1829 who died 1831.

After this i see him in 1841 with his mother Ann Gaulton in Pleasant St Liverpool along with Harriet Higginson her married daughter and William her son..

After that by 1851 hes in Oswestry with an Isabella Wiliams and her two kids to a former marriage .. he later marries her he was a Pipemaker

I think we can count Charles out unless he did get another woman pregnant.. and did a runner to Oswestry..

William was the one i thought could have been the father of Samuel.. he marries in 1842 but we cant as yet figure out which bride.. too many..om Free BMD..maybe she had a son.. but he is widowed by 1851 with one little girl also named Harriet born in 1845.

So his wife must have died 1844-1851..that was the line i was taking till Carol said Sams dad was called Robert.

Then again Samuel would be with William in 1851.. or would he be with Williams dead wifes family..

Talk about complex..

Hi Col

Yes me too :D I had a marriage from the 1840's with a father named. I was convinced the groom was illigitimate and couldn't find a trace of this so called father.. I got the second marriage which was from some 20 years later, no father named on this one  Obviously wasn't so bothered in later life that he couldn't name a father.

Samuels early life

Post by Carol1953 »

Hello
I have just had an email from Keiths Auntie Win from USA on his second marriage the fathers name was left blank.
The story we were told is that he went to sea as a cabin boy when he was six years old, on a clipper ship but don't know if it was American or British. Sam told my Dad that they were shipwrecked (no date given) and the ships cook saved him as well as the other cabin boy and they were put ashore in Baltimore. Sam next surfaces as an apprentice to a ropemaker in or near Boston at the age of fourteen. Why he left the ship we do not know but he must have made at least one more voyage after the ship wreck because he had his hammock with him. How do I know that? Well, when I was very young , before I started school and my Grandma (Sams' daughter-in-law) would watch me if Mum had to go somewhere, and it was summertime she would always say "I'll get Dad's hammock and you can have a nice sleep in that all afternoon" and she would rig it up.
We know there was a son - it was well known throughout the family and was never a secret, except for his name. I also know about him through a cousin Phyllis, who lives in Canada. Actually she is my Dads' cousin - her Mother Nellie was one of Sam amd Elizas daughters - two of them immigrated to Canada in 1911, and Phyllis told me that Nellie told her that Sam went back to Boston often to see his son, but she didn't remember anything more about him. The only time frame for all of this to have happened has to bebetween 1855 when Sam was working in Boston and 1860 when he married Elizabeth. Sam would have had to been very young but I think in those days age didn't matter very much. We think that Sam must have gone back to Boston when the Civil War started in 1861, probably not intemding to get involved in the fighting, but probably thinking to bring his son back with him to keep him safe - much like children being evacuated in WW2. However, he did become involved and told my dad that he did join up and did fight. His saber used to hang behind my parents bedroom door for many years and I was always being told not to touch it as it was very sharp and I would get cut.

Hi Carol

Thanks for that interesting update :D fills in some of the missing years doesn't it.

I had a sneaking suspicion this would be the case
Iwonder if Robert was the name of the ropemaker he was apprenticed to. Perhaps he thought fondly of him and used his name on the first marriage  :?:

As I mentioned before it could be the shame of illigitemacy deminished with age :?:

Still doesn't find his birth cert though does it? I wonder if it could be the Newcastle one and he didn't realise he was born there? In fact how do we really know he was definitely a Haswell, he could be just using that name :? :? doesn't bear thinking about

Let's hope the death of Harriet gives us a clue to something

Think we need some passenger records to check his comings and goings to USA..in the early days..

And yes Haswell might not be his name..maybe we could get someone to check 1851-1861 census's for USA for Robert Haswell Ropemaker..

All very interesting thats why we cant find him maybe he too is on an 1851 census over there....

Sam next surfaces as an apprentice to a ropemaker in or near Boston at the age of fourteen.. that would be 1856..wonder who the mother of this son was... the lad had to be with someone..and i wonder why he came back if he had a son there..

Hi Susan has looked at this Sam he was aged 41 in 1855 so not him

I just said to her maybe Sam changed his name over in the states..lets face it if he has stowed away as a lad he must have been running away from something.. a bad life maybe no father around..this Robert Haswell could be the Ropemaker who he was apprentice to in Boston. Maybe the only father figure he had ever had...

I am also wondering about Joseph his son now.. i searched full birth reg's for him under Haswell & Hanley and nothing, what if Joseph is the so called son born in Boston, and hes brought him back here..he could have been due to be 2 years old in 1861..so born c1859 Sam then meets Elizabeth and when she dies..he then takes him back to Boston....he obviously did not marry the mother of this child..why ??? could she have died in childbirth maybe ....its only guessing.. but this Joseph dissapears after 1861.

Maybe he took him back to live with Joseph's mothers family..Then again he could have been Elizabeths son we know her father was called Joseph...he could be registered under Handley or Hanney etc....

There is death Liverpool 1867 says born abt 1862?

Hi Col

Sam and Elizabeth married at Edge hIll 10/6/1860. The 1861 census has young Joseph age 1 already, I know it may not be quite right, but either he was already born at time of marriage or Elizabeth was pregnant. Could do with a check of the baptisms to see if he is at same church they married :?

There is Joseph Haswell baptized St Nick's 1862 to George and Mary, so he could be the 1867 death

Unfortunately the Incoming Passengers by this name were born 1910, 1916 or 1931.

A Joseph Haswell on the ship Cuba going to New York 15 November, 1871, is age 37, a Gent, sailing from Liverpool, birthplace England.

One leaving Glasgow, Scotland on the Anchoria 23 October 1901 age 18
Male, Single, Engine Cleaner Read and Write, English, last lived in York, landing in New York, final destination Kewance Ills? has a ticket for final destination, paid his passage himself, 15 dollars, was in the US in Sept 1900 Charleston, going to Uncle Wm Goodall in Kewance Ill. never been in prison, not a polygamist, not under contract to work, Good health, Not crippled or deformed, Ticket Number 50. This entry has been crossed out, don't know if he didn't make the journey?

One border crossing of a Joseph Haswell from US to Ontario, Canada July 1909 29 year old labourer, much of the entry is very dark and difficult to read but it would seem that he was undesireable and Returned.
