Aigburth/Toxteth boundary

Post by daggers »

Once upon a time Aigburth was part of Garston and ended at Aigburth Vale/Jericho Lane at its northerly end.
When did the 'authorities' start treating the Aigburth Vale to Dingle stretch as Aigburth?
The reason for asking is that for WW1 the War Graves Commission put detailed addresses for many of the fallen or their next of kin in their Debt of Honour Register, but for WW2 they seem to put 'Aigburth' with no details of road/street in many cases.
I am looking at the numbers of 'Aigburth' men and women recorded by CWGC, but cannot tell how many are from the old area and how many from the new. CWGC say they will answer my query on this in up to six weeks, but I know this Forum is quicker!

Hi Daggers,

I don't know if this will help at all but worth a look.

My understanding of the addresses/areas shown on the CWGC is that this was the information supllied by the next of kin. I know of someone whose father died in the Second War. The forms were sent to the wife to fill in but she never returned them as she was convinced her husband would return. His entry therefore has no age, no address and no husband of etc.

My point is that as I understand it if the person sending back the forms said Aigburth that is what is listed even though it may not strictly be correct.

Very interesting site - I shall return to it.

I have read that about the information supplied by families, but it seems strange that so many of the WW2 should have put 'Aigburth' with no street/road. I may have to hold on for CWGC's answer, but it will probably not be in time for this year's Remembrance Day.
Thanks to you both.

I would agree with Ed Off about the address details being given by the family, I did hear that also and it would seem to have been confirmed by the entry for my uncle http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_det ... ty=2047841

Thanks again. I may have to delve into Kelly's, voters lists etc to get addresses. Grrrr! [Too many to ask here.]
