The Allisons again!

Post by kwr »

My wife signed up (with gritted teeth) for the Findmypast site to use the 1911 censusand the London parish records.

I have done some searches on other branches with some success but my Allisons remain elusive. I cannot find ANY of them in 1911.

William Allison born 1862 Liverpool an electrician
James born 1886 in Walton. Down as a messenger in 1901 census.
William born 1888 in Walton
Hugh Stanley Allison born 1895 in Walton.

I find it difficult to believe that all three are untraceable in 1911! The William born in 1888 was in New York in 1910 so might be abroad as crew. His father - I posted the only picture I have of him and he seems to have been a petty officer in the Royal Navy so may also be away. Hugh I cannot find.

I'm really only asking for comments and opinions. I have both earlier and later census/death certs/medals etc so don't need help there. You've thought laterally before for me. What am I missing this time?

Ken,

I have found a William and Hugh S Allison arriving in New York on the SS Caronia sailing from Liverpool 1909, arriving in New York 17th Oct.

No info on William, listed as father of Hugh S, there is an address of Victory Square Liverpool.

Hugh S is listed as age 11

Found the ships passenger list on the Anc website.

The passenger list also appears to be on www.findmypast.com - it may contain different information than on the Ancestry one. Hugh S Allison is shown as adult in the index.

Find my past has no other information only has Hugh S down as adult and a labourer in 1909 on the Caronia.

Thank you all for your replies.

It looks more likely that they were not in England in 1911, I suppose. I did have Hugh S. Allison on the Caronia as a child who was sent back from Ellis Island as too young. It's certainly somewhat confused because, as is said by Jan and Eileen, he appears on one page (Name & Description of British Passengers) and on another the List or Manifest as a child - thanks to Northmeols for that link.

As you can tell I've only just begun to look at Findmypast and hadn't investigated migration or passenger lists. As a consequence of you all directing me that way I now have a possible lead on William Allison junior. There is a William Allison occupation Iron Moulder on the "Iveraia" which left Liverpool for Boston on Feb. 23 1909. As the family lived only a street or two away from the big employer the Melanear it may.... be him. Difficult to know how to eliminate or confirm...

Thank you all again.
