Following on from the disappointing result on this one, I am delighted to report that progress is being made with some of my other posts!

Any help on Wilfrid Morris would be most welcome!

The following was reported in The St Helens Newspaper and Advertiser on 7th September 1917.

" Honour for St Helens Soldier"

"The friends of Sgt Wilfred Morris, son of Mr Morris, stone carver of Greenfield Road and brother of Lieut Morris will be pleased to learn that he has been decorated on the field with the Military Medal and recommended for the Distinguished Conduct Medal."
I suspect he was recommended for the Distinguished Conduct Medal, but was awarded the Military Medal. Sadly I have no records that prove this.

Hi Mark,

If you google Sapper Albert Fishwick and click you will see I have put a memorium on the Bayeaux Cemetery grave site for him in France. He was my father's younger brother and I am sure he was in the Royal Engineers.

Many thanks for your post. Your tribute to your uncle is lovely. Have you tried to obtain a copy of his units War Diary? pm me if you need a contact who could do the research for you.

I have visited Bayeux War Cemetery and had noted Albert's grave. I regret I know very little about the St Helens RE in WW2. Another project I suspect!

I have spent most of today in St Helens library and I would like to thank the staff for their help.

One of my tasks was to go through the St Helens Newspaper and Advertiser for 1915 to extract any information I could find on the Engineers.

On item I located in the issue published on 16 March 1915 was a item headed "Catholic Rolls of Honour". One of the churches listed is St Thomas of Canterbury, Windleshaw. There are seveal RE men listed amonst them is Wilfred Morris and his brother, who served in the 1/5th South Lancashire Regiment.

Does anyone know if the church published a magazine during the Great War period?
