A lot of what ifs and certainly they do fit, but we have to remember that it was Alberta FENNELL who married Edward, so that certificate is needed to see if she was a spinster or widow and who is listed as her father, to make the sense fit

Dear Lesley,
Been lying down in a darkened room all weekend :) (oh if only!).
I think we have probably found the elusive Edward Charles Blamey after all.
I think you were right and he does use the Blamey and Dodd names interchangeably (oh what fond memories of my Birchall/Cranks that brings back).
The only way to sort this out was to put it all in chronological order – see below.
I think the Edward Dodd aged 7 in 1891, living with Charles Dodd is Edward Charles Blamey. It all makes sense to me!
Questions still remain about Edward Blamey senior's birth and death and what happened to Albertha and why Edward ended up in the orpahanage, particularly as his grandparents Charles and Ann Dodd are still around in 1901.
Also not sure if we can assume Charles Dodd was Edward Blamey senior's father or whether he just married his mother Ann Blamey. If he was the father, why did they wait so long to get married and it is interesting that they do not appear to have any more children?
Let me know what you think. Despite the unanswered questions I’m pretty convinced.
(Off to lie down again now)

And after that summary I'm now off to lie in that darkened room! How they like to confuse us, but I'm glad we are all in agreement that we've found the little guy.

Are we sure that it was an orphanage he was in rather than some sort of industrial school, like training for his future career?

In view of all the name changes that marriage cert is a must have.

Hi Chris
So pleased to hear from you

haven't been able to trace Alberta's death and I've searched all 3 surnames, not traced his father's death either - as it was at sea not sure what success I'll have - fisherman rather than naval.

I wondered too why he didn't go back to grandfather's house or even live with him - wonder if he was a bit of a rebel!!

His leaving papers from the orphanage just say 'gone to friends' and address given Crowthers Hill, Dartmouth but haven't searched that yet

Think I'll go and find a darkened room too!!

Hi Chris just re-read your last post - sorry I didn't appear to reply to it

Follow everything as you've laid it out - looks similar to mine - didn't track rest of family to 1901 just had Edward Charles on Nautilus.

Another oddity - on Edward Charles b/c (1883) it names father as Edward Honeyberne/Honeybourne Blamey - have you ever come across that name - I've searched but no success

Hi Mary

it was definitely an orphanage (Brixham Seamens Orphaned Boys Home) although i guess they were expected to go to sea and received basic training whilst there

Just didn't want it overlooked that the Honeybourne was noted on that also.

Am I expecting too much from this marriage certificate - I'll be embarrassed if it's a bit of a let down.

Hi all,
I've been let out again 8)
Glad that we seem to have all reached a concensus.
Haven't found any other references to Honeybourne.
Looking forward to hearing what the marriage cert says when it arrives.
If there is anything else I can look up Lesley, let me know.
Not sure what else they have in Torquay library. I know they have some parish records for Torquay, so they might have Dartmouth as well.
