How do I locate a Grave ?

Hello
I am trying to locate a grave, or two. I am trying to locate he graves of a few of my ancestors, and was wondering if there is an online database I could search ? Or lists ?

In particular I am looking for a Benjamin Rees who died either Sept 1886 0r 1887 in Bootle. (So Walton on The Hill / Lancashire). He was born Llanellen S.Wales 1837.

I'm also having trouble tracing some recent deaths (between 1923 and say 1990 anyone ovver any suggestions as the FreeBMD and BMD on Ancestry returns a blank).

Hi Adrian,
Can't help with finding graves but might be able to with deaths between 1984 and 2005. Post the full names and where they died (if this is known) and the yob or, preferably if known, the dob.

Deaths from the 1920s to the late 30s are not yet fully transcribed into FreeBMD so its a matter of trawling the indexes up to Dec 1983.

For someone dying in Bootle you could try Bootle cemetery or St Mary's churchyard. Crosby library holds St Mary's on film. The church was destroyed by bombing in the WW2

Hi Adrian,
Looked for Benjamin's death in Lancashire between 1881 and 1891 but only found 2 children less than 1 year old. One was in Sept 1886 and the other in Sept 1887. There's also a 51 year-old in Oldham in 1890.

The only death in an all-counties search, with an age abt 49/50 (given he was born in 1837) was in Narbeth (located on the borders of Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire in Wales).
Deaths Sep 1888: REES, Benjamin - 49 - Narberth - 11a - 418.

What reason do you have for believing he died in Bootle in 1886/87? I think you need to confirm the year and place of death.

Benj is in 1881 censu bn 1837
living at 33 Sandy Lane Walton on the Hill
Little John 2 born in Gloucs, other kiddies born Wales.
1891 dghtr Temperance 8yrs is born Bootle, 48 Garden Lane Bootle, wife Catherine widowed 43.
The census has given a time frame for Adrian's search for Benjamin.

Hello Tina,
Yes, I had found the family in the 1881 and then in 1891 with Catherine as a widow. That's why I searched that decade for Benjamin's death. The two possibles Adrian gave are infants according to FreeBMd and FMP.

I also found a possible Benjamin with Catherine and the oldest child in the 1871 in Wales.

Has your Spring sprung yet? I've friends up in the Blue Mountains on t'other side of the country who are still brushing up the red dust!

There is a Benjamin REEVES who died in W Dby rego aged 52yrs in 4th qtr 1889 birth year 1837.

And me again!
Tina, that Reeves death is definitely Reeves on the GRO index page on FMP.
May have been incorrectly registered in the first place. The cert might give his occupation and address and even give a known rellie who reported the death to confirm it really is Adrian's Rees.

Hi Adrian,

Bootle Cem didn't open until 1913, but as Ed Officer has said St Mary's was bombed in WW2 and a lot of the bodies were transferred to Bootle cem, but there are still a lot of headstones in St Mary's (now a garden).

Other possibilities are Anfield, Everton, Kirkdale (though not in Kirkdale but Fazakerley), also Ford and Yewtree.

I have also recently found out that the Welsh often buried their relatives back in their birthplace if they had been living away from where they were born when they died!
