Help please with street directories

Hi to all and a request please if any one has access to street directories for 1884 onwards could they possibly do a lookup for Strickland Street, Everton in the name of John and Elizabeth Mc Dermott, he was a seaman

These folk are my gt grandparents and the address is shown on the birth cert for my grandfather he was born at no 7 in October 1883, I know from info given to me that they did not show there on the directory of 1883, it seems to have been a lodging house with a family named Dawson, I am wondering if they stayed in the area immediatly after their son's birth, although they do show in other census and finally ended up in Stafford St, Bootle. The two of them are real mystery's as to where they married etc.

Can you explain when you say you can't find their marriage etc...on the 1891 you have submitted a corection saying Elizabeth McDermott is Elizabeth Wesson, you say she is your Grandmother..when i thought she was your Great Grandmother..

1883 919 ST SYLVESTER ELIZABETH WEST - JOHN JOANNEM McDERMOT

Also i notice in 1891 Elizabeth is down as a Widow then in 1901 shes not and John's occupation is a Ladies Tailor..

Hi Liverbird.

I looked in the 1881 census and Mary A Dawson was listed at 7 Strickland Street then, she was also there in 1891,( Mary Dawson) so if it was a lodging house, only the head of the household would be listed in the directories.

Do you have your grandad's birth cert with his mother's maiden name to perhaps try and find a marriage?

I'd looked through 1891 today with no luck for male McD bn 1883 not knowing Mum was born in Hunts surname McDermott wid 33.
Where was little Elizabeth born it looks like Baall??
I'm sure we've done all this before??

Hiya

Little Elizabeth born in Bootle..can't see a marriage anywhere other than this Elizabeth West one to John McDermot 1883 St Silversters..

Elizabeth was working in Edgbaston Warwickshire in 1881 for a Solicitor.& his wife...checked if maybe the solicitor HERBERT NEW.. had moved to Liverpool and taken Elizabeth with him but hes still there in 1891..so unless Elizabeth and another Housemaid just took of and headed for Liverpool or she met John McDermot in Edgbaston....i am not sure how she ended up here..maybe she altered her name to West because she had ran away from her job in Edgbaston who knows ?????

That marriage needs checking out though, as the timing is right..although its says Marriages Sep 1883 3rd quarter of the year.. and John the son was born 7th Oct 1883..if it is her she was already pregnant ..so must have know John early in 1883.

Hi to all, thanks for the prompt replies to my posting.

Yes, I did post once before regarding my Gt Grandparents at 7 Strickland Street, the information on the address came from my grandfathers birth cert, he was born in October 1883 and at the time I thought his parents were the householders, I was given the names of who were the householders but I have wondered recently did they show as House holders on any of the later street directories as a married couple, but I now realise that only the head would be shown.

I already have the cert for the marriage you mention of John Mc Dermott to Elizabeth West in August 1883, but this ladies maiden name was Aindow and she was a widow and my Elizabeth was a Wesson and I know her father was John.

There have been many mistakes in the census regarding my Gt Grandparents, in the 1891 Elizabeth Mc Dermott is shown as a widow, Head, with her two children at 168 Irlam Rd, presume John must have been at sea, along with the family are a lodger and visitors. There is also another lady at the same address who is also shown as a widow and head and she has a lodger.

In 1901 Elizabeth is shown with John her husband and 2 children but he is down as a ladies tailor with the word dock crossed out in front of this description.Their birth places are correct Scotland and Earith, Huntingdon.

The latest census 1911 shows them at 35 Stafford St, Bootle, I know they were there in 1907 as my grandfather (their son) married from there, but in this census they have their name transcribed as Mc Derment and they have their birth places shown the wrong way round, but the important thing to me is the fact they said they had been married 28 years and this takes me back to 1882/3, but sadly up to date no evidence of it. from Liverpool record office or free b.m.d, although I realise not every where is transcribed yet. The one thing that my Gt Grandmother was constant in was giving the correct birthplace, hers was Earith, Huntingdon (aka, Bluntisham-cum-Earith) apart from 1881 at Edgebaston were she is down as coming from Ewitt.

Tina, the place name is Bootle for the young Elizabeth.

Could I ask please how you know Elizabeth McDermott's maiden name is Wesson and how you know her father is John?

Hi Liverbird...

Dickiesam has just checked for the marriage in Scotland and nothing to be found....

Starting to think there may not have been a marriage are you ????

I am also wondering why she left her job in Edgbaston Warks and ended up in Liverpool.

If John was a Sailor he wouldnt have been in the heart of the country.. he would have been in Liverpool..for a girl coming from a small village she made some big moves to big cities didn't she, could she have been pregnant and thats why she left Edgbaston..and maybe did not want to go home for the shame of it.. and decided to head for Liverpool..

Maybe she then met John who took her under his wing and took on the child as his own..but they never actualy married..sounds far fetched i know but hey stranger things have happened.

The only other explination is she married not long after the census of 1881 and maybe came to Liverpool with her first hubby he dies and she doesnt remarry,, just lives with John as hubby & wife..

BUT if this is the case we need to find a marriage..the problem is she could have moved on anywhere

after edgbaston..

Hi Col, I have actually gone through all the same thoughts in my mind after all the search's I have done even to the extent of checking Scotland's people and checking any Elizabeth Wesson who married in England in the time scale to see did they become a widow and then marry a Mc Dermott (aint we a strange bunch when a mystery happens like this?)

But
It clearly states on my grandfathers birth cert John Edward Mc Dermott father John Mc Dermott
mother Elizabeth Mc Dermott formerly Wesson

I know people have made up stories before concerning their personal lives but somehow I dont feel she would have been brave enough to lie to any one in a legal situation, having worked for a solicitor she may have heard of some of the cosequences of lying, of course I could be totally wrong as from what I have heard she was cute (not the Shirley Temple type of cute).

Thanks once more for all the suggestions and help, I will keep looking but as you say they may never have married, but again (clutching at straws)they did say on the 1911 census that they were married for 28 yrs (census in April 1911, it would take the marriage back to 1883/1882.
It's funny how something can bug you, but I guess we all have similar quests.

Hiya

I have the same sort of prob..my Great, Great Grandparents Archibald Cook & Elizabeth Mellor married in 1873.. in 1881 they are together in 1891 no sign of Archibald and their two eldest kids.. Elizabeth is in Kirkdale with the youngest child..
1901 Archibald and all 3 kids are at another address in Kirkdale no sign of Elizabeth.
1911 Archibald is living with a Mary E they have two daughters 4 & 6 saying married 10 years.. YERRRRRRRRRRRR no marriage anywhere why.. because Elizabeth is still alive somehwere so he couldnt marry Mary E.
family stories say he was in Rainhill..so i am starting to believe this..she was robbing doormats in 1897..from Lpool Mecury News Paper.. so she was going through a rough time by the sounds of it....

I recon they had seperated..also family stories say an old lady used to meet my Great Gran Jane her daughter at Kirkdale Station with parcles of food etc.. Great Grandad would not have this woman in the house... my Aunt Sally Janes daughter is still alive she was born in 1919 she is the one who used to go with her mum Jane to Kirkdale Station and saw the lady..

I recon this was Elizabeth..and she had been a bad mother and put Jane through a lot... Jane always said to my mum her Grandaughter she was in the Cottage Homes in Fazakerley and i dont think she would make that up..

So you see even though on the 1911 they say married for x amount of years.. they can be lying, i know Archibald was.. Jane's brother also called Archibald was in Lodgings in 1911 on Commercial Rd..so he wouldnt live with dad and new partner, where the other brother William is i am not sure its a common name so hard to track him.

Have you gone through all Elizabeths siblings to find any descendants today.. who may recall any family gossip etc...

Hi I see what you mean, so I am not the only one with a headache. I have no idea of were Elizabeth is buried or when she died so it is another avenue to explore. I know her daughter Elizabeth (Lizzie) married a welsh chap Humphrey Williams and they went to live in Trawsfynned, we went there years ago with my mum who is now 101yrs she remembered the farmhouse etc from a visit as a child, needless to say to look for a Williams was the proverbial needle in the hay stack. I shall keep looking and hope you have some success with your family, will keep you posted
