Liverpool ARP Warden, World War II - How Do I Trace Him?
Liverpool ARP Warden, World War II - How Do I Trace Him?
Greetings, all.
My late great grandmother's brother, Bertie Rose, served as an air raid warden in Liverpool during WWII. My mother thinks his actual name was Albert, but I am not certain. Does anybody know how I might trace him?
Many thanks,
Pat

Hi
If he was born after the September qtr of 1911 - his mothers maiden name will be alongside his birth registration
What was your great grandmothers mothers maiden name and we can have a look for you to see whether he was Albert/Herbert and we may possibly be able to find out who he married

Bertie Rose, ARP
Dear Carole,
Many thanks for your response. This is what I have on him:
Bertie William Rose, born January 31, 1890, in Sculcoates, Hull, the son of William Rose and Elizabeth Letitia (nee Cuthbert) Rose.
The little bit of information my late grandmother had about her uncle was that he was an air raid warden in Liverpool during WWII, and that he had a son and a daughter. Would any of this help? Ideally, I'd like to find a surviving member of his side of the family in addition to some ARP information and, if he served, his WWI info.
Regards,
Pat

He is not on the 1911 census. Both the 1891 and 1901 show his birthplace as Hull and although there is a 1911 entry under overseas military - it does not link to a Yorkshire or Hull/Sculcoates birthplace
There is a Bertie Rose in Sculcoates in 1911 aged 18 but his birth is on freebmd in 1892
No WW1 service record either and no medal roll under Bertie William
The only Bertie Rose marriages in Liverpool were these
Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1919
Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference
ROSE Bertie F BLISS Elizabeth Everton, St. George Liverpool 2018WD/16/386

Bertie Rose
Thank you ladies! I sure hope somebody can help me locate this man. He was quite a rogue, apparently, and my great grandma (his only sibling) didn't have much contact with him as a result. His niece, my grandma, went to her grave wishing she had been able to put the two sides of the family together, and that's been a dream of mine for years. He's got to be out there someplace (well, WAS out there someplace), but where, I wonder?
Regards,
Pat the Grateful

I suggest you ask for a look up from SKP of the 2 marriages of a bertie Rose that have ben found in the Liverpool area. You have his father's name so you will be able to tell if one is yours.
If one is yours it would then be possibly to see if either marriage produces children and then follow it down from there.
You could also see if someone would be willing to look at the Electoral roll for around 1937/8 at the address Tina found to see who else is in the household.
The other thing would be to have something put in the Liverpool Echo - I understand there is an old Pals bit - please can someone add the contact details for this (thanks!)
