Hi
Does anybody have any information on a hairdressers which was run from the upstairs of 37 Princess Street widnes, it was owned by Lucy Broderick and her sister who went by the name Rita but I have been told this may have been a stage name.
Lucy married a Gerard Caine and had another sister Margaret (Peggy) who ran the Arch Hotel (Slutch 'Ole) in West Bank with her husband Percy Bibby.
It seems there was also another sister named Polly Broderick but I think her real name was Mary I can,t find a marriage for either her or Rita but it would seem she had at least 10 children and died before 1957. any information on these ladies would be a great help to me.
with thanks.

Hi and welcome to the forum.
If you are able to give an approximate date for the period you are interested in the hairdresser's shop that might help, alternatively a few more definite details might help us look for facts, such as birth/marriages etc.
This might be your starting point -
Lucy Broderick married Gerard Caine Q4 1931 Prescot 8b 1333
Just a set of twins to this marriage I believe.
also
Margaret Broderick married Percy Bibby Q4 1919 Prescot 8b 1517
Three children to this marriage that I can see.
You can order these certificates online from http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ and it will give you details of where they were living, age and occupation, together with father's names and occupations and witnesses who might be helpful.

I think finding the age of Lucy at the time of her marriage is going to be very important since I only see one born in the right area and that was Q2 1895 Prescot 8b 715 and this is before the mother's maiden name was given in the indexes, so no clues towards her parents marriage.
The other entry which I thought rather less likely was in Q1 1904 Fylde 8e 658.

Thank you for reply Mary , Lucy was born 1895 which means she married age 36yrs in 1931.
I guess the hairdressers would have been running 1930,s,40,s, and maybe early 50,s

Hello everyone, parents of Lucy were James Turton Broderick and florence Manifould the family lived Wavertree Avenue widnes. siblings to Lucy Annie, Margaret, Ethel, Mary (Polly) James any information on this family would be of great help
Does that mean that they didn't marry until about the same time as Lucy?
I see a James S Broderick to a Florence A Manifould but the date is September quarter 1931 Prescot 8b 1538.
Unless anybody has memories of the address you refer to I'm not sure that there will be any records kept of a small business such as this. It might be better if you were to place an advert in a local newspaper to see whether anybody would respond to it.
If you wish to research your family further backwards, please provide the details from the marriage certificate - ie what she gave as her age and father's name and occupation etc. and we'll try to help from there.

I wonder if this could be them in 1901
28 Heyes Street, Fleetwood, Thornton, Lancashire
James Broderick Head M 30 General Labourer Lancashire Widnes
Sarah Wife M 28 " "
Ethel daur 7 " "
Annie daur 5 Lancashire Thornton
Margaret daur 2 " "
RG13; Piece: 3977; Folio: 154; Page: 34
This makes the birth entry for Lucy that I gave above - Q1 1904 Fylde 8e 658 - seem very much more likely.

Yes this is the family but I wonder where Lucy is if we are correct with birth year she was born between ethel and Annie
I think the family in Northwich, Cheshire in the 1911 census might be worth investigating, mother Sarah Ann and Ethel both claim Widnes as their birthplace and the dates of birth are correct, however, the other family members are a bit confused compared with the 1901 census. You'd need to purchase either the image or transcript to gain more information.

Re: hairdressers shop
The reason I've been asking for Lucy's parents names - or at least father from the marriage certificate - is because the Lucy born in the Prescot Registration district in 1895 would appear to have parents Martin and Maria in Prescot.annie57 wrote:Yes this is the family but I wonder where Lucy is if we are correct with birth year she was born between ethel and Annie
Proof is required - what age does she give on her marriage certificate?
