NOT REGISTERED, Is it possible?

Post by Scouserbetty »

Hello, can a person go through their life and not be registered at birth? This seems to have happened with my Grandmother. I orderd her birth certificate from the GRO over 3 weeks ago and have just recived an email from them saying they cannot find anything. My Grandmother, Jane TROY, born 1892 married my Grandad, Edward Gaynor in 1916. Their marriage cert reads that her Father was Joseph Troy an Invoice Clerk and she was living at 101 Braesnose Rd Kirkdale at time of marriage. Surely she would have had to have a birth cert to get married, to prove who she was at least. All her death cert gives me is that she was born in Liverpool. My sister and I know very little about her life. Apparantly, she was an only child and her Parents died when she was 2 and she was brought up in a Convent by Nuns. I just dont know what way to turn now, should I just close the book on her? I have gone down every avenue I can and now I have reached a dead end. Any advice or suggestions would be welcomed with open arms. Thank You. Betty.

Hi betty Neither of my grandmothers were registered at birth 1888/1899 i then went searching for the baptism records which i found.
It was probably a case of no money to register them although ones siblings were Irene

Hi Betty

I can confirm that it is possible for a birth not to be registered. My paternal grandmother was born in 1877 and I have her christening record with her birthdate but there is no registration although several of her siblings were registered

You may want to consider the possibilty that Jane was illegitimate and made up a fathers name when she married so as to appear "respectable"

There is also the possibility that she was not born in Liverpool but if she was raised by nuns from such an early age - she would not know any different and see Liverpool as her birthplace

Do you know which convent she was raised in? Do any records exist which may throw some light on her past
Cheers

The only Jane Troy of the right age showing on the 1911 is a Jane Troy aged 19 in an Institution in Brentford Middlesex. Have you checked this Jane out?

If the institution is run by nuns it could be your Jane. It will also give a place of birth for Jane.

Hi

I have checked deaths from 1892 to 1901 for Joseph, only one in Liverpool in 1900 age 36.. but looking at census he was not an invoice clerk.. It was my thought that maybe Jane had exaggerated her age a little if she was under age when married, and no parents to give permission, and then this change in age has stayed with her through her life. (this happened with my own grandmother). Couln't find any birth for a Jane fron 1895 to 1900, but did find a Rosabel Jane in Dec q 1896, West Ham 4a 159 :? She is on 1901 census in Canning Town, Essex, but her father is William :( (coincidentally though her father is from Liverpool   )

Hi, I just want to thank everyone who has took the time to help me. Irene, you suggested I look up the Babtism records, I never thought of that. Carole, I have thought that maybe she was Illegitimate and has made up her Fathers name. I will take on bored all the advice I have been given and hopefuly some thing will come up. Thanks a lot, Betty.
