Help please Edwards family Stoneycroft / Old Swan Liverpool

Post by Bryan Bennett »

Could anyone help please, I am trying to find info on the Edwards side of my family? All I know is that my Grandmother Mary Catherine Edwards lived at 21 Acanthus Rd Old Swan in 1921. She married a Joseph Harold Bryan from West Derby on 9 Nov 1921 at the Church of St Oswald, Oswald St. Mary's father was a Lewis Cox Edwards, Mary bore 3 children Joseph Harold, Mary J and my mother Brenda Doris. Lewis Cox Edwards was a seafarer and can not find him in censuses. I have never had any contact with possible family members. I am very stuck and do not know where to go from here.

Many thanks
Bryan

Hi Bryan.. welcome to the forum :D

Do you know what year Mary Catherine was born, was she born in Liverpool? Do you know her mum's name?
Also did she have any brothers or sisters?

Yes thats her Simone. I have her wedding certificate and her address is as in my OP. My problem is I can not go backwards further as Lewis Cox Edwards does not appear on any census records. And can't go forwards as I have no contact with any family members thats why I'm stuck!

You could order specifying that father's name should be Lewis..

Yes, understand that Bryan, just thought that if you got the birth certificate you would find out who mum is, and chance that she may be on the 1901 somewhere married already to Lewis, althogh she could also show on the census as married but husband not at home. The family may be mistranscribed somewhere as well :?

Have you tried the 1911 census, it is pay per view as well as a sub site :?:

I did notice a Lewis Edwards b c 1878 on the 1891 RG12; Piece: 2938; Folio 49; Page 38-
His father Daniel is a Mariner, b c 1836 Anglesey and is in the Toxteth Park Workhouse by 1901. No sign of son Lewis, could he have also become a mariner and is away at sea?

looks like this Daniel married Ann E Dicksin at Liverpool St Luke in 1876 according to Lancs BMD.

Just keep it on the back burner until you get other details.

btw Bryan

who were the witnesses at Mary's marriage? anyone worth following up there?

also meant to add before, that once you know who Mary's mum is, you can then find her marriage to Lewis. That should get you on your way with Lewis again :D

Hi and welcome to the forum.

It sounds as if you have the marriage certificate but have you checked the actual entry in the parish register? If you are able to I have seen some entries in St Oswald's where the priest has very usefully noted in the margin that the bride or groom had been baptised in the church and gives the reference. This could give you a clue and might also save you ordering the birth certificate.

Hi Bryan

If you can hang fire a bit, I am going to go to Liverpool in the next week or two to do a lookup for a cousin of mine. I can look at the marriage then and see if there is a baptism

Well that's quite some commute!! Maybe pack a parachute next time you fly overhead and drop in

Well we are always thankful for our forum members who are able to help out at the Record Office, hope Simone manages to find a baptism for you.

given the fact that his given names are Lewis Cox Edwards I ran a search by last names there is an Edwards/Cox marriage in Manchester that might be worth checking out

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1874

EDWARDS Joseph COX Emma Manchester, Oldham Road, St. Barnabas Manchester 86/2/165
southport woman long way from home. aka "Tide is always out at Southport Wombat"
Rimmer, Unsworth, Hough, Lee, Quine, Howarth, Johnson, Bromilow, Bigland, Cullen, Clague, Orme, Walker, Livesey, Stone

Hi Bryan

Sorry, the marriage gave no other details whatsoever :(

I looked for a baptism for Mary Catherine Edwards in 1903 but couldn't find one at St Oswald's :(

Sorry not better news

Hi Bryan

I know this might be a bit of a long shot you don't appear to be registered on this site anymore, but, I am very distantly related to Joseph Harold Bryan from West Derby. I have been researching my own BRYAN family tree on and of for some 30 years now, have tried to explore every branch of the tree. I could help with your tree going back if you wish. Please get in touch if you wish.
Thanks
Regards
Robert
