JAMES ROBERT BARLOW
To try to go further ahead to help go backwards, Sandra could get the copy of the 1911 census.
RD453 SD2 ED19 is the reference and from the index it would appear that the household consists of
Richard Lloyd Tuttle 45 (1866), John Richard 22 (1889), Sarah 18 (1893), Elizberth! 16 (1895), Robert 14 (1897) also a John Perks age 28 (1883)

I was having a think that Martha might not be Robert's first wife and started searching for a marriage between 1881 a\nd 1891 - what do you think of this lot, all on the same page, a double wedding maybe?
Robert Barlow
Sarah Barlow
Martha Jones
Tuttle Richard Lloyd
Q1 1889 - Liverpool 8b 65 - both marriages took place at St Matthews!!
and from the IGI
Robert Barlow and Martha Jones 25 FEB 1889 St Matthew, Liverpool
Fathers Henry Barlow and Lewis Evans.
So Martha will have been married to a Mr Jones and presumably the Jones children will be hers.
I think the Register needs checking, Robert and Martha married on 25th and Richard and Sarah on 27th? that seems strange.

What fantastic findings you guys, I have been scratching my head over this one! Got splinters now haha.
Mary,
I was in LRO the other week and I was checking out two marriages for a friend, the people that married were two sisters, one of them was a widow, they both married in the same church on the same day and were witnesses at each others weddings, one of the sisters went to write her old married name and then crossed it out and put her new married name, so she obviously married first then witnessed her sister's wedding.

That's a cracker, I wonder if this will be similar. Sandra just HAS to get a copy of the Register.jan44 wrote:I was in LRO the other week and I was checking out two marriages for a friend, the people that married were two sisters, one of them was a widow, they both married in the same church on the same day and were witnesses at each others weddings, one of the sisters went to write her old married name and then crossed it out and put her new married name, so she obviously married first then witnessed her sister's wedding.

James Robert Barlow
I think that MaryA's thinking about Martha not being Robert's first wife could be on the button. In the 1871 and 1881 the only Robert that fits has a wife Ellen bn abt 1847. I think she was Ellen Marshall who married Robert in Sept qtr 1866. There's a death that fits as well: Deaths Dec 1883 - BARLOW, Ellen - 39 - Toxteth Park - 8b - 196.
Incidentally, Martha's birth place in the 1891 census should read FORDEN not Torden. And I also agree that Martha had also been married before to a Jones, hence the Jones growed-up children at home with her in 1901.
I think this is her in 1881. The 2 children in the 1901 are here:
JONES, William - Head - Married - 43 - 1838 - Carter - Berriew, Montgomeryshire, Wales.
JONES, Martha - Wife - Married - 38 - 1843 - Forden, Montgomeryshire, Wales.
JONES, Mary A - Dtr - Single - 9 - 1872 - Lpool, Lancashire.
JONES, Martha - Daughter Wife - Single - 8 - 1873 - Lpool, Lancashire.
JONES, Alfred - Son - Single - 3 - 1878 - Lpool, Lancashire.
JONES, Jane - Dtr - Single - 0 - 1881 - Lpool, Lancashire.

Thank you all for your replies, you are incredible. My Aunt has been searching on and off for approx 10 years for her father. We had our suspicions that something was not right but your result was absolutely wonderful. The old photo has been found but is in very poor condition (dark), going to go to Photo Shop to see if it can be restored.

Thank you for the offer Susan. My Aunt has the photo, she tried scanning it and sending to me last night but it was coming out too dark. Maybe she can try and lighten the scan and it might come through. Was very excited that her father had at last been discovered. I doubt we'll ever know why he changed his name.
With a correct name you might be more lucky in obtaining his military file.
As a hint, when I had a really bad photograph I wanted to scan, I found that my scanning software had a "correction" button so I used this to see what would happen and luckily it gave much better results.
Yet another thought - he married at 44 years of age .... what was he doing between 1919 (army discharge) and 1940. You might not like this idea but I would suggest that you look for an earlier marriage in the name of "Tuttle" or one of it's variants.
Now that you have the correct name, and it's a little more uncommon than Barlow, you might have some luck in searching Findmypast's outbound passenger lists.

Thinking of Mary's post I found on www.cheshirebmd.org.uk the following marriage which you may wish to investigate.
Robert Tuttle and Hannah Roberts 1922 Birkenhead Civil Marriage
Ed Officer
Just a thought maybe someone with a directory for the 1920s could look for an entry for a Robert Tuttle.

Thanks for your suggestions re photos. My Aunt took the photo to a Photo Lab today and it will be back tomorrow at which time she'll send it to me and I'll post it.
We have no idea where he was from 1919 until 1939. Your suggestion of another marriage will certainly be investigated. Very interesting now it has started to unravel.

If you think the Birkenhead marriage might be a possible you can order the certificate from either the link on the CheshireBMD index, by post, or online from the General Register Office
Whichever you try, the cost will be £7 and you will need to specify some reference checking - in this case his father's name is an obvious one - as if the entry is incorrect they will refund part of your money, just keeping a portion as a search fee.
I think this marriage is worth checking out as, although there is a family in 1901 living in Birkenhead, William and Maria Tuttle, with their children, I see no evidence of a Robert being born in Cheshire.
Just thought I'd mention also, that I don't see any children born to the Tuttle/Roberts marriage.

Maybe it'll encourage you to do some of your own Mark
I was just trying to tie up a few loose ends, but haven't managed all of them.
Marriage for Mary A Jones to Arthur Wilkins
Q4 1893 Kirkdale St Mary
Suspected parents of Martha Wilkins, granddaughter of Martha Barlow in 1901.
Marriage for Jane Jones to Edward Griffiths
Q4 1903 Heswall St Peter
On the same page is a marriage for a John Jones to Louisa Cliffe which also took place in Heswall St Peter – could this be another double wedding? although I don’t see a John amongst Martha’s children so maybe I’m mistaken, just coincidental.
Attempting to check the 1911 index entries I think Martha is still around, just mistakenly transcribed
Living in the Heswall area are Edward Griffiths 33, Jane 30, Edward 4 and Ena 4 weeks, but also Martha Griffiths age 66 with a birthplace of Montgomeryshire.
Also in the household appear to be a family with the surname MALE and a Samuel Perston.

Thank you once again for all your help, you've gone over and above what we ever expected. We have printed out all the pages and will work through them. I have the photo of James Barlow (Tuttle) in kilt uniform but unfortunately it is still very dark even after being restored. I don't think it would come out clearly. I also don't know how to post it.
