Industrial School Northumberland Terrace

Post by lucy »

On the 1911 census I have found my husbands grandmother in the Liverpool Certified Industrial School in Northumberland Terrace.I have tried searching[ googling ] to find information without much success and this is a quite a surprise to her daughter ,my husbands mother, who knew nothing about it.On the census it states she is 14 ,a scholar and her occupation is that of a Housemaid

What I would like to know is under what circumstances would she have been there, the only information that I can find says the scholars could have been from a drunken home, but my husband says he doubts this would have been the reason as her siblings both older and younger weren't there with her, also the rest of her family all lived together and her father had a job. It does say that a magistrate could have sent the child there for truancy or obviously having done something wrong.

Is there anywhere that might hold records of this school that I may be able to look at.

Thankyou

Lucy

There is a link to some information here http://www.missing-ancestors.com/liverp ... 20info.htm unfortunately I don't know if there are any registers held at the Liverpool Record Office, I don't see any in the catalogue.

As you give her occupation as Housemaid, I wonder if she worked there rather than attended?

Mary ,

Thankyou so much for replying,I will look at the link you have given me ,all the girls have occupations such as Housemaids,Laundymaid and Sewing and the Head is given as Superintendent and the Sewing Mistress, Kitchen Matron, and Laundry Matron are listed as Officers, these are words I wouldn't normally associate with a normal school environment. As I wouldn't have thought her family were anything other than a normal family I can only presume she might have been a "problem child" .

Again thankyou for your interest.

This link will give you general information on Industrial schools

www.hiddenlives.org.uk/articles/raggedschool.html

Children in the schools were trained for a future job which is probably why an occupation is given for each child.

The schools were actually Homes with a school and that's why you get Superindentent etc used. The children in the school were "in care" for some reason.

Mary,

I have had a look at your link and I actually found this last night,it was interesting to see the description of the house.

Ed Officer,

I hadn't found this information and it has helped to give an insight into Industrial Schools and I had always wondered about the term Ragged Schools.I still think she must have been in some sort of trouble as both her father and her older sister were in jobs ,her father was a tailor in a shop and there were two younger sisters still at home,if it had been to remove the child from bad influences then I would have thought all the younger children would have been taken away.

Thankyou both for your interest and help.

Hi Lucy
Let's have a look in 1901 census for you.
In the far right hand column she may have a disability?
If not, she could have had a serious illness e.g Scarlet Fever and was taken away into isolation also to build her up or perhaps Rheumatic Fever which was rampant.

Tina good luck

Apologies for not replying sooner,I don't know where yesterday went to .

Tina,

Thankyou for your offer I hadn't thought of that so I had another look at the 1901 census after you mentioned it and there is no mention in the end column of any disabilities for her or anyone in the family,if there had been a serious illness would she have been in a school, sorry just realised you probably meant recuperating do you know if that sort of thing happened

Katie.

No I don't think the family were Catholic,Ive just asked my husband and he said he was actually christened in St Georges but not as a Catholic,he thinks it started out as a different religion but had changed when he was christened, also a schoool was built next to the church but it wasn't the Industrial school.I will have to check this out as he is remembering it from many years ago when he was born and lived around there.

I was hoping that records for the school may be held somewhere and we could have access to them.

Thankyou both

Lucy
