Need some Detectives...

Post by colette »

Hi all

Right i have an ALICE BENSON B LPOOL C1878 ...

I haven't got a clue who this woman is..

1911 census Alice aged 33 is visiting a (Henry) GEORGE.... GOT NAME WRONG Platt at 28 Mirfield St , She has with her AGNES BENSON B LPOOL C1889 & ELSIE BENSON B LPOOL C1896.
It says Alice has been married for 16 years so c 1895 and has 2 kids born to the marriage and 2 kids living.

Now we dont need to be experts to realise that Agnes born 1889 can't be hers.

Agnes in fact is my husbands Grandmother born to Thomas Benson & Mary Ellen Nagle in 1890, Elsie is her first cousin born to Noble Benson & Elsie Burdette.

So who is this Alice they are with in 1911.

I can see two marriages in 1895

St Silas Henry Benson to Alice Lowe

West Derby no church named Nathanial Benson to Alice Briggs

Can anyone work out the connection of this Alice to my husbands Grandmother..By 1911 Thomas Benson Agnes's dad had remarried as her mother died.. and had begun having more kids with the new wife.. they ended up having 10 all in all.

Also Elsie Benson's parents split up as i have her dad having a baby with another woman and calling him Noble..

So it could be Agnes & Elsie felt unwanted.. but whoever this Alice married has to be connected to Agnes but i havent come accross any Nathanials or Henry's in the family..

Alice Benson

Post by dickiesam »

Hi Colette,
I've a feeling that the Alice in the 1911 may not be connected at all and don't be surprised at the age of a mother when you work it out. I've 2 who were 14 years old when they had a child. One was a domestic in 1891 at a posh house in Woolton owned by 2 married middle-aged brothers with no wives at home in the census. No father named on that birth cert! The other was a domestic at an inn in Widnes. This time the father was named and the couple married 4 years later! Unfortunately they didn't live happily ever after!

I found 5 Elsie Benson births between 1895 and 1897, including 2 in West Derby and 1 in Prescot. Also 4 Agnes births, 1888 to 1890. Only 1 in West Derby, presumably yours? The rest were in Ulverston, Ormskirk and Barrow in Furness. The names may be a coincidence.
Cheers,
Dickiesam

To narrow down the Elsies in Merseyside, I would think the one registered in Prescot is living in St Helens in 1901 and the other is living in Everton, the daughter of Oliver and Elizabeth Benson, with a ruck of kids from 24 down to 2 years old. No Agnes amongst them.

1901 A Nathan Benson 30 Coal Hewer is born Newtown, wife Alice 29 born Wigan and their son Peter 6, born Newton, living 22 Betley Street, Hindley.

I'm wondering if they were "visiting" in 1911, then somebody else would have given the details, is it possible that they were all just marked "born Liverpool" by the head of the household, and do we have any idea how Alice knew Henry Platt anyway?

I've found this family in 1901

60 Cottenham Street, West Derby Western
George Platt Head M 29 Journeyman Joiner Prescot
Clara Wife M 32 Coventry Warwickshire
Nithan son 5 Prescot
Jane daur 3 "
William son 6m Liverpool
RG13; Piece: 3487; Folio: 26; Page: 17

I don't know if this is the marriage - George Platt to Clara Hartwell Q1 1896 Prescot 8b 819 - it doesn't equate with the 11 years given by "Henry" but is before - just - the birth of Nathan Platt Q3 1896 Prescot 8b 704.

Haha! you found the deliberate mistake Col!

No matches on LancsBMD or FreeBMD for Benson/Hartwell marriage.

 We need to laugh about this one, it's a mystery! If we could just identify who she is I bet it would give you the answer.

Benson

Post by colette »

Hi Mary

there are two births i found on ancestry

Grace H Benson 1917 West Derby mother Lowe

Frank R Benson 1919 West Derby mother Lowe

Alice would be 39 in 1917 and 41 in 1919..

Found a few people with Alice Lowe's born c 1878 in their trees on genes so have contacted them.
