I am hoping to find someone who can give me any ideas to trace my german great grandfather who family folklore says arrived in Liverpool aged '14' having jumped ship here in Liverpool from Cologne. The earliest record I can find is on his marriage cert when he is aged 22 and he is at Rokeby St Everton. Before this I cannot find him on any census, perhaps he was 'under the radar'!! I cant imagine where a 14 yr old would live in a strange city now nevermind in the 1800's so any ideas would be much appreicated!

german gt.grandfather
Hi, my gt.grandfather also came from Germany aged 14 in about 1880, only appears on 1901 and 1911 census, I havent been able to trace him back to his homeland and have been trying for several years. There is a new site called Liverpool History Projects which has a list of 'Aliens' names and addresses which may be useful, as far as I'm aware during the war years my relative may have had to sign a register at the local police station which are held at Kew! My next port of call will be the Maritime Museum to see what I can find there - after that I give up !! Good Luck - Holly

This is the link to the Liverpool History Projects site.
The difficulty with somebody with a German name is that it might have been anglicised by people he came across.
We look forward to hearing more details and hope we'll be able to be of help.
