Thank you so much for your prompt reply. I am very grateful and amazed! My Mum said that one of the family had a fish business so as well as having the address confirmed I have also found my fish man!

Yes please if you can go backwards or forwards I would be very happy.

All the best

Jean

Hello Jean,

From 1911 Liverpool Directory only one George Bourne listed - Insurance Agent, 7 Millman Road Walton.

William Bourne - Team Owner 20-22 Kirk Street, Kirkdale.

Hope that helps.

Don't know if the parents have died before 1911 but put this number into the Census Reference box of the 1911 census http://www.1911census.co.uk/search/tnaform.aspx and enter Isabella Bourne in the "Other Members of the Household" and you will see that George 18 and Mary Jane 27 are with Isabella 13 in the North Everton district.

If you are able to confirm by George's marriage certificate that his father is James, a Ropemaker, then we'll be able to continue with the 1871 census.

Team owner

Post by dickiesam »

Hi, just thought that since son William seems to have inherited the business that I'd mention that the 'team' in team owner (occupation - George and William) doesn't mean they owned Everton or Liverpool FC. It's a team of horses that would be used for hauling other peoples carts and wagons on a contract basis, such as for breweries.

THank you

Post by Jean Raza »

Thanks to all of you for taking the time out to help me. From all the info you gave I can confirm he is my man! Ties in well with other details. I have got 1851, 1861, 1871 and 1881 census of his parents (James, Ropemaker and his wife Mary) so thanks, Mary, for the offer but I have it.

I have been told that James Bourne died on 26 02 1981 and his wife Mary on 29 01 1897 but have nothing to back this up. Is it worth me sending for the certs?

Going back another generation, James's dad was Robert Bourne. Born around the 1800 mark. He married Martha Foster, I believe but I have nothing at all on them. Any ideas?

Finally, thanks to Dickiesam for the explanation of Team Owner. I knew it had something to do with horses but did not exactly what.

Cheers everyone

Mary and James Bourne

Post by Jean Raza »

On 1851 census they are newly married and James is 24, Mary 18. I make their approx DOB as circa for James and 1833 for Mary.

James would have been 54 when he died and Mary also 54. They lived and died in LIverpool. All the family seem to have lived in the Kirkdale area.

Cheers

Jean

The 1881 census was taken on 3 April 1881 so as your James Bourne appears on that census with his wife (at least I think he does) he cannot have died in February 1881!

try www.freebmd.org.uk for a possible death you know about when he was born and you would be looking for a West Derby registration as they appear to be in Everton.

I will get on the case right now!

If I wanted to take Mary Bourne (nee Parr) and James Bourne back a generation - her father was George Parr, Coppersmith, his father Robert Bourne corde maker (think this is rope maker??) how easy would that be? Mary was born 1833 and James 1828.

Thanks all, happy Saturday.

Thanks

Thank you for all your help, I will continue investigating! Is it worth me trying to get birth certs for James 1828 and Mary 1835?

Civil reegistration only began in 1837 so there are no birth certificates for 1828 and 1835, you will need to look for baptisms instead.
