Overseas Death

Post by Kebs »

Can anyone advise where to search for details of a death in Bombay 1864 to enable to obtain a copy of death cert.

I am assuming that as he was from Liverpool his death would have been registered here.

Many thanks

Bombay deaths

Post by dickiesam »

Hi Kebs,
Give me a name and I'll check out the FindmyPast records of overseas deaths. Was the person in the military or a private individual?

Hi Dickesam and Tina

Russell Mellor bn. Edge Hill 9/2/1841 Occ: Gentleman/Annuitant.

The reference to his death was found from an Newspaper article - which gave age and father's name, all matched, which leads me to believe it is him as I have been unable to find any record of his death here.

Thanks for the link Tina will have a search.

Many thanks

Hi

They're on www.findmypast.com BUT they only start in 1849 which is too early for you.

Army chaplains returns start earlier 1796 if he was in the army they're also on find my past.

Otherwise the other links might help.

Thanks Ed Officer - will have a scout around, unfortunately the other links did not throw anything up, these Mellors have not made it easy!

Good luck Northmeols - thought India was bad enough.

Russell Mellor

Post by dickiesam »

Hi Kebs,
Just searched the GRO Consular Death Indices from 1850 to 1940 (when he would have been almost a 100 but no success. Found a couple of Mellors dying in India alright but the wrong forename and age. Also searched the shipboard deaths up to 1920 with similar results. Bit of a mystery!
Dickiesam

PS: Note to Northmeols... I have FindmyPast so if you let me know the Brazil birth and a rough date/decade you are looking for I'll have a go.

I imagine that many deaths abroad at that time would not have been reported to the local consulate. At least you have got the death notice information from the newspaper. I think the India information from the British Library is still a work in progress so he may yet appear.

Hi

You more then likely have the following:-

Marriage to Alcock 4Q 1912

Marriage to Croker 3Q 1923

Both on FreeBMD.

Brazil births and deaths

Post by dickiesam »

Hi Susan,
I searched the Consular and Marine Births Indices from 1884 to 1890 but didn't find a single Balsillie. Sorry!

So then I started to search the Consular and Marine Deaths for John Balsillie and almost immediately found these:

GRO CONSULAR DEATH INDICES (1886 - 1890)

Balsillie - John; Supt Registrar District = Rio Grande do Sul - Vol 8 - Page 195. And...
Balsillie - John M..jor; Same district Rio Grande do Sul - Vol 8 - Page 195.

I googled Rio Grande do Sul (it's Portuguese) and it is in the south east of Brazil. Lots of info on Wikepedia.

The word in my italics looks like 'Major' but is quite difficult to decipher. If you PM me with your email address I'll send you the page extract copy.

Given the relative rarity of the surname, (at least in Brazil!), these two people may be father and son, since Major was the mother's maiden name and I am thinking that John Major Balsillie is the son.

The info above is enough to order the death certs from the GRO. Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Dickiesam
