Toxteth Park Cemetery

Hello. Does anyone know if Toxteth Park Cemetery has a cremetorium attached to it? I only ask because my GG Grandfather Frederick Tipping (aged 31) died in January 1897 (of phthisis), and his son Joseph Lezart Tipping (9 months) died in June 1897 (marasmus), and they lived in Grey Street, Toxteth Park.

I assumed (tut, tut) that as they lived in the district that they would be buried in the cemetery. I've been online at www.old-liverpool.co.uk and looked at the link to the cemetery, but it's only letting me look at the consecrated section, and so far I haven't found anything.

I will be taking a trip to the records office to see if they have any information. If I can't find a burial then I'm assuming that they were cremated, (as opposed to being dumped in the Mersey!). This is why I would like someone to tell me if they have knowledge of a crematorium.

I thought that your postcode determined where you are buried, is this not the case? Is it possible that they ended up in another part of Liverpool? Can someone help?

I'm afraid postcodes didn't come into being until quite recently, certainly in the second half of the twentieth century although I can't remember exactly when.

From the "Handlist of Cemetery and Burial Records" available from the Liverpool Record Office, I believe £2.50,

"Cremation
Cremation in this country was not legalised until 1885. There had been interest in the practice throughout the 19th century and the Cremation Society was founded in 1874 ..... the first proper crematorium was opened at Woking, Surrey in 1889 .... Manchester 1892 and Glasgow 1895. The Liverpool Crematorium was opened at Anfield Cemetery on 11 September 1896 by the Lord Mayor of Liverpool ....
The Liverpool Record Office does not hold any cremation records."

The handbook will be the best place to check for the various locations of cemeteries and church graveyards, of which there are many and it will give you the reference numbers of the films to check.

If there is a chance they were Roman Catholic, it is easier to check as there is a black box in the microfiche section of the Liverpool Record Office listing all RC burials and identifying whether they took place in Ford, Yew Tree or Ainsdale, you can also cross reference to see who else is in the grave.

You will hopefully find a burial record for your ancestors, but as it was the head of the household and the wage earner, it's likely that the family may not have been able to afford a headstone.

Don't forget that the RO is closed next week.

There is no crematorium at Toxteth Park, only at Anfield and, much later, at Springwood.

Does anyone know what date the records office reopens? I would like to go there to do some research, and also to buy the book that was recommended by MaryA in her reply to my previous post.

It's a regular annual two week closure, so I don't expect it will over-run.

If you are able to go on a Tuesday afternoon, have a chat with the helpers on the Help-Desk, manned by some of the Society Members, you will get some excellent advice from them on the spot.

They've just completed 1885 for Un-Consecrated graves.
There are a number of Tippings listed in site.

Anfield Cremation records are at Liverpool Record Office under reference 352 CRE they start from 1908. The first cremation to take place at Anfield was a lady from Southport when it opened. St James Cemetery Toxteth Park is worth looking in for your burial.

You can access microfilms of the original Tockie Park Burial records through the Latter Day Saints Their address and contact details in Mill Bank is below. For a very low cost you can order the microfilms in which cover 1897 (see Film details below) and you can peruse them at your leisure for a few weeks.

Hoorah! braved the record office and bought the book as MaryA suggested. Got some help from a member of the Liverpool & SW FHS, who showed me how to use the microfilm.

Unfortunately, no Frederick or baby Joseph at Toxteth Park Cemetery

I will have to go back next week, and check the other cemeteries.
