Birth Certificate

I have a BC for my grandfather, Andrew Flynn, b. 1843 in Liverpool. I can make out most of the information, but can't decipher his father's occupation. I have a good scan that I can email via private message if anyone is interested.

Hello Bridget,
Send me a PM with the scan attached and I'll have a go at it.

You might try using a photo-editor on the scan, crop out the surrounding area then enlarge the Occupation section. I find it often helps in deciphering.

In addition you might be to find the father in the 1841 or 1851 censuses. You know his probable county/area of residence and could take a stab at his age. I suggest you edit your post and put some names, dates and locations into it. There's a host of SKPs on this forum who would be happy to look for you.

Is this the Andrew Flinn, pedlar in 1851? and waiter in 1841, If so it doesn't seem to help does it.

My Andrew Flynn was born in 1843 in Liverpool. His father was Patrick Flynn, his mother Elizabeth Clark(e). (It's Patrick's occupation that I'm trying to decipher--in the hope that perhaps I can trace him through his occupation.)

Patrick and Elizabeth were married in 1842; I've ordered their marriage certificate from the GRO, but haven't received it yet. (Flynn was spelled Flinn on the FreeBMD data base.)

I've searched the census records from 1841-1901 on Ancestry.com, but haven't found a family with a Patrick and Elizabeth--and a son, Andrew.

Andrew doesn't show up in the censuses until 1871. He was an earthenware dealer from 1871-1891. (On his son's BC his occupation is listed as Hawker.)

I haven't been able to find any record of his marriage to Alice A. Taylor.

I'm new at genealogical research, so I'd appreciate any help, advice, and suggestions!

Looks like Tinman to me... I've got loads of Tinmen in my tree

Forest of Dean is full of them.

looked at it on pm message it looks like tin maker or for want of better explanation he may have worked for a smelting company...several around liverpool. or as a peddler/repairing pots. any way I have Son "A" as a Hawker in 1871 if you need copy of census let me know will send it to you

Looks like Tin maker or man to me.
I did what my daughter once showed me.
Took my cursor and trace round the writing. You sort of get a feel for the letters that way if you know what I mean.

Hi Bridget,

I believe the occupation to be Fireman, as in one who stokes a fire, and not a firefighter. The F in Fireman is similar to the F in the surname Flynn.

I have an ancestor who was a fireman at a Liverpool sugar house.

I saved it to my doccos, blew it up and it's even worse, the grainy background.
Addison St is correct.
As for Andrew?
If only we could find them in the census for 1851.

Hi all,
I did a post about this but it's disappeared. So here goes again. I still think that Patrick was a 'tinsmith' on that 1843 birth cert and found this Pat(?) in the 1841. His occupation here is 'servant' but he is literally surrounded by tinsmiths in the household.

FLIN, Pat - 1821 - 20 - M - Manchester, Lancashire.

He might have adopted the trade. I remember tinsmiths coming down our street, except we called them tinkers (no disrespect to Romany folk, by the way) a couple of times a year. They used to repair the pots and pans in the neighbourhood. They were closely followed by the knife-grinder man who sharpened the carving knives!

And now I am fairly sure this is Andrew in 1861:
FINN, Andrew - Lodger - 17 - bn abt 1844 - Earthen Ware Hawker - Manchester. RG09; Piece: 2952; Folio: 90; Page: 6.

Address: 29, Copperas Street, Manchester, Lancashire.

If Patrick was a tinsmith/tinker he could well have been a 'travelling man' and been missed in a census. Hopefully we'll get his and his wife's ages from the marriage cert which will help find them.
