Yorkshire

Post by MaryA »

Details of thousands of Yorkshire criminals are to go online. York Castle Prison, now a museum, has compiled details of felons and debtors from the 18th and 19th centuries from various sources and will be making them available for free from 17th July, 2009.

Much of the data comes from
  • York's Assize Court records including people who were sentenced at Quarter Sessions, many being transported to America between 1710 and 1775.
  • Executions at York between 1710 and 1899 with details of crimes, locations and occupations
  • Insolvent debtors in York Castle Gaol from 1710 to 1813.
The details are not complete but you might be lucky in finding a missing ancestor. There are even records of some of the victims.

You will be able to search by name or keyword and the results will be from the original source although no page images will be available.

Link not working at present, I'm hoping that is just until 17th July when it's expected to be online.
