Post by sasha »

My Gt Gt Gt grandfather,John Taylor was a licensed victualler living in Walton at the time of his daughters marriage in 1862. Does anyone out there know of any way of tracing where the pub would be??

Any help appreciated !!

Hi Susan, sorry I can't give any more info as at the moment all I have is his daughters marriage cert in 1862. Eliza married William Cunningham Taylor at the Parish Church at Walton on the Hill and gives her age as ' of full age ' and her father John as being a Licensed Victualler. Not much to go especially as they are all such common names and a Taylor marrying a Taylor!!

Thanks

If you work from the later censuses and children it might be easier to pinpoint Eliza's age and birthplace?

What do you know of their children and what census details do you have for the family?

What addresses were given on the marriage certificate? and William's occupation?

Might I be right in thinking that this is them in the 1871 census? If so it's possible you need to be looking in Manchester rather than Liverpool.

A clue maybe?

Birth of John VERNON Taylor Q2 1871 West Derby 8b 418

Although it's a christian name, it was quite uncommon then, which made me wonder if it could be a family name, as William's middle name of Cunningham may have been. So perhaps keep this marriage in mind as a possible.

John Taylor to Hannah Vernon 23 May 1830 Saint Mary, Manchester

There is a baptism for Eliza Taylor 15 September 1833 Cathedral, Manchester.
There are other children baptised to a John and Hannah at the Cathedral over the space of a few years, but as the dates are pretty close to each other, they are probably of two families.

Thanks to you both ,you have given me quite a bit to go on! The marriage of John Taylor and Hannah Vernon looks to be about right with perhaps a littlemore research. The family you've found on the 1871 is the correct one, John Vernon Taylor is my Gt grandfather, his son is William Vernon and my father had Vernon as his Christian name !

Thanks again
