Thanks again Ed Off.
Yes you're right, we will have to wait for reply.
Perhaps occupation came from a marriage cert?

For details of Police in Liverpool you need to check the Minutes of the Watch Committee in the Liverpool Recod Office.

Only just found your message re Thomas James Little (constable in 1901 census in Clayton le Dale area (at time was resident nr Ribchester). He later became the police sergeant at Hale Village. I didnt meet him as he died before I met my husband (his grandson) but I did meet his wife Florence who at that time was very old. Sadly during that era no one asked questions re ancestry and history was lost. Thank you again for your kind help it is much appreciated. My hisband's family name is Viggers and his grandfather lived in Halebank nr Liverpool but he was born in Audlem Cheshire. I presumed he moved to Liverpool area for work. I have had no success whatsoevr finding information re my mother's family. He maiden name was NAIN, her father George died during the first world war. I discovered his parents came from Oldbury area but there the trail died. Regards Ellice

You will need to check at both the Liverpool Record Office for the Minutes of the Watch Committee for details of his service in teh Liverpool area and also the Lancashire Record Office in Preston which might give you some background as to his career in Clayton Le Dale.
The only G Nain I see on the CWGC site is Son of James and Sarah Nain, of Widnes, Lancs; husband of Catherine Nain, of 15, Fisher St., Widnes, Lancs, who died 07/08/1917, Service Number 49679. He was a Lance Corporal in the 1st Battalion The King's (Liverpool Regiment).
George's Medal Roll Index Card is available online, some of our Military Experts might be able to tell you about the medals he was entitled to -
Victory - Roll H/2/102B/18 Page 2076
If you don't have Sarah's maiden name it would be best to get George's birth certificate which you can order online from www.gro.gov.uk (Q2 1888 Prescot 8b 667) or the Prescot Register Office. I suspect the marriage is for James Nain to Sarah Gargan Q3 1876 Prescot 8b 1029. Again you will need the details of the father's names to be able to continue further back.
The 1891 census gives Sarah's birthplace as Ireland and the 1881 census as Greatbridge, Staffordshire. As the 1871 census gives the birthplace of her parents and her older brother James as Ireland, although her's is given as Stafford it may be that she also was born in Ireland as I don't see a birth registration for her.
Again James father also gives Ireland as his birthplace and I wonder if the name Nain has derived from his Irish pronunciation of the name Noon?
Peter Naine married Eliza Fisher Q2 1845 West Bromwich 18 741, this should hopefully give you their father's names although it will still be difficult to follow further in Ireland.

I would also suggest you find Thomas on the 1911 census which would give you some idea of when the move from Clayton le Dale took place. The indications from the 1911 index is that he was living within the Leigh registration district.
I'm not sure but I wouldn't have thought Hale would have come under Liverpool Police at that time more likely to still be Lancashire.

I only did a little, and realised part way through that what I was finding Ellice probably had.
Perhaps she could tell us exactly what she has, and we decide if she's finished with the Police bits or whether there should be a new thread.

Nain family
Thank you so much for all the research you have done on my behalf. My maternal grandfather was the son of James & Sarah Nain (nee Gargan) My motehr (who died 3 years ago at 93) told me that Sarah's brother was Dan Gargan who became Mayor of Widnes. Plus she said that she thought her grandparents had come from the Midlands (Oldbury?) with the Birmingham works (Brom) in Ditton Road. I did have the info about my grandfather George Nain from a book by a Widnes policeman "Jesus wants me for a sunbeam" and it contains all the records of men from the Widnes area who died in WW1. Also re Viggers (my husband's name) we are still plodding through records about his maternal grandfather Sgt Little who was in the police force. I've managed to get some printout of 1901 and 1911 relating to him and his family. Once again, thanks for your time and efforts. cheers Ellice

Hi Ellice

Anc% have a young man born in Widnes who died in WW1
at Gallipoli 1915, 5th Btn Royal Irish Fusiliers.

Dear Tina
The Dan Gargan about whom I wrote didn't die in WW1 as my mother who was born in 1915 remembers him quite clearly when she was growing up in Widnes - she used to visit him. Apparently he owned several houses in the Wellington Street/Nelson Street area which was situated just south of Hutchinson Street at the edge of the West Bank area. Thanks for your info.

Hi Ellice
I understand about Dan being the Mayor, I listed Dan who died in WW1 as it was an unusual name & the fact he was from Widnes.
I thought he may have been a relative.

Would you like me to ask her to drop in & have a look for you?
