Hood St, Bootle. Help with Maps or Directories Please

Post by Liverbird »

Hi to all, I am looking for details of the above street were my Nanny lived I know when I was a child the family were in number 44 and I feel that from what I have been told that she was in number 42 before the war. From memory when I stayed with her, her house was the end one and next was a debris were 42 would have been and then a wide cobbled opening that went through to Keats St I believe. The street carried on with the lower numbers meeting up with Peel Road. Any help with maps or possibly street directory's around the 1930's to 40's of who lived at these numbers would be very much appreciated, just to settle a memory disagreement, cheers L.B :)

I have a bet with myself that Jan will know, :D

Hood St was close to Knowsley Rd, if choose Derby Rd then use the up and down arrows on Tony's 1930 Philips St map to navigate around you should find it . http://leverpoole.co.uk/1.001/m/philips-map/9/1.shtm

Hi L.B
1938 Directory has Carey at number 42 & McDermott at 44.
Even numbers between Gower St & Gower St.
Odd numbers off Peel Rd

I hope this is of help.
All the best

Hi to all, thanks for the info, I found the map after I posted the question. My Nan was the Mc Dermott in number 44, but my Mum who is now 101 years old has memories of the family being in Hood Street before the directory you found Tina, I was always under the inpression that Nanny had moved because the house next door had been bombed, but my aunt has always said that Mum never lived at 44 which may have been right as by 1938 she was married, so really I suppose I am looking for some date a lot earlier than I mentioned.

My Mum's long term memory is really good and she talks of all the old neighbours in the street from when she was a child so I know they all lived there as a family, my aunt is 83 so a big difference in age between oldest and youngest sister's. It was a lovely street all cobbled, everyone took huge pride in their homes, it was like looking down a straight edge, all the doorsteps scrubbed and a neat line of whitening to the edge of the step, apparantly in Mum's day the ritual was all the steps were done on a friday night the women cleaning them by candle light (a candle each side of the step) she said you had to skip over them and not leave a mark (the steps, not the women). I suppose it is really my own curiousity as which part of the street the Mc Dermott family lived in prior to no 44. Thanks for all the input. Cheers L.B :D
