Hoginson's Lane, Allerton/Aigburth/Mossley Hill area, 1840s
Hoginson's Lane, Allerton/Aigburth/Mossley Hill area, 1840s
Can anyone say where this lane was, please? It must have been close to Rose Lane and is referred to in a legal document of 1841. That is how it was spelled, but Aigburth was spelled Aigburgh!

Thanks- I'll use Liv RO in future.
I have found another, later spelling of Hogginson's Lane - with the extra 'g' - in 1855. This also refers to the nearby farm house occupied by a Mr Atherton Green, which could help to pinpoint the area. Does he appear in the 1851 census, please?
PS: I have looked at the OS 6" 1st edition - no Hog[g]inson's Lane visible.

Hi Daggers
Not yet found Atherton in 1851 but
1841 just listed under Allerton
1861 farmer 130 acres AllertonRoad
1871 Greenhill Rd farmer 56 acres employing 5 men
1881 census Green Hill Road West Farm retired farmer. This is between Acrefield and Red House
Could Green Hill Road have once been Hoginson's Lane?
Nothing to do with your search but my mum was born in Greenhill Avenue Allerton only she used to say she was born in Calderstones!

Atherton Green age 52 with his brother George age 57 and a couple of servants are living on Allerton Road in the 1861 census. He is a farmer of 130 acres employing 6 men, born Lancaster Aughton, District of St Mary Grassendale and George was a Surveyor with the same birthplace.

This is the Description of the Enumeration District for 1861
The whole of the Township of Allerton, including Calderstones, adjoining Woolton road on the east, to Mr Pilkington's farm on the south, where it joins Speke to Mr Atherton's Farm on the South West, where it joins Garston to the boundary of Wavertree on the North.
For alteration as to part in Much Woolton see issue? marked by it's ??
Ecclesiastical District St Michael's Chapel, Garston
" St Anne's
" St Mary's Grassendale.
Could this "Mr Atherton" be Atherton Green?
Judging by the census entry in 1861, it would appear that the farm is in the St Mary's Grassendale area, does this help any?

Great stuff! Many thanks for all that. Yes, the name of 'Mr Atherton Green' & his farm crops up as one of the markers for the boundaries of St Mary's, Grassendale, when its district was defined.
EDITED to add: found the brothers Green in 1881, farm called West Farm, Green Hill Road, etc. Thanks again.
Now to find a flat surface so that I can unroll my OS map and plot things in on a trace!
