I'm guessing that because Proposed Uk address: Hamilton House, 28 Crockerton Rd, Upper Tooting SW17 keeps popping up, could this have been some sort of Embassy, or maybe an owned holiday home in London, or just where some rellies lived.

I was hoping to find this MP, because if he came from Jamaica to the Uk, then he should be on a list somewhere. Also if the Marleys were visiting in London, then hopefully it was rellies they were visiting, which means they had to be in/from the London area.

Ty Tina and Mary,

I just have a gut feeling about the Essex lot. If Norval just stayed in hotels in Liverpool, rather than at a rellie's or friend's house, then I don't think there's a direct link there with relatives, unless he did father a child in the area, and stayed to visit.

Thanks lots Sue,

Robert Cecil Marley is my uncle, so is Henry George Marley , Albert N. Marley would be my father Norval Albert St. Clair Marley, the youngest of the 3 brothers.
The trips in the 1930,s would be them going to study in the UK.
The later trips in the 1950's were most likely vacation and cricket test
matches as Robert Cecil was the head of the West Indies cricket board of selectors.
28 Crockerton Rd. might have been an aunt Rose Walker that they stayed with.
She was the only relative that my father mentioned them having contact with in the UK.
Can 28 Crockerton Rd be checked for residents at the time ?

I don't think the John Marley is ours.

We still have the conflict of copies of hand written certificates:

Marriage of Robert Marley* ' full age' and Ellen Ann Bloomfield, 18 years,
at Chapelton, Clarendon, Jamaica, on 10th September 1876.

with :

Marriage -4th June 1908 Robert Marley ( son of Ellen Bloomfield )
age 30, Father- Albert Thomas Marley to Helena Maude Walker age 26,
Father- Henry Walker, St Andrew. Jamaica

*The 19 year old Robert Marley Essex boot repairer was born in 1882.

I'll try to spend some more time on this in the next few days. Really appreciate all your work.

Bob Marley And The Ancestors

Post by cornes »

As a Rasta rude bwoy Bob would have much enjoyed the irony that his ancestor Staff Sgt Fred Marley 1820-87 was the youngest child of Thomas Marley 1776-1844 superintendant of Rye Gaol

The Marleys were a long established family in Rye
- Fred's wife Hannah Jane Tiltman 1824-99 was the daughter of a Trinit House pilot there

Fred's elder brothers were
- Wm Geo 1800-80 innkeeper of The Bell at Iden
- ?John 1801-73 an unmarried ostler who ended up in Rye Workhouse
- Thomas 1804-41+ a waiter(that is to say a customs officer)in Canterbury
- Charles 1812-99 a seaman in Rye
- Alfred 1814-81 a waiter in Rye who ended up as innkeper of The John Barleymow Rolvenden
- Geo Sims 1817-76 a timber merchant in Maidstone

Fred left Rye to join the East India Co's Artillery and lived in their barracks at Little Warley near Brentwood
His third son Albert Thomas 1851-85 was a carpenter at home in 1871
but then went to Jamaica where I think he married Ellen Ann? Bloomfield on 10 Sept 1876
Here I am guessing that Mr R Marley who arrived in Jamaica from Liverpool per Californian in Jan 1872 and Robert Marley(white of full age) who appears on the 1876 marriage cert is Albert Thomas 1851-85
It seems a pretty good guess, but I cannot explain it
Why was Albert Thomas in Jamaica ?
I very much doubt that it was to buy wood for his uncle George Sims
His uncle's timber business in Maidstone was small and his sons ended up as clerks to a timber merchant there
Is there a 1881 Census for Jamaica and does it show what Albert Thomas doing in Jamaica ?
In 1885 he died in Panama presumably working for the French on the Panama Canal
Presumably he was in Jamaica at(or to be accurate,9 months before)the birth of his 2 sons, namely Robt A 1878-1938 and "Captain" Norval Sinclair

Robt A(does the A stand for Arie?)was "a well known rum merchant" in Kingston
Does Chris know more of his business ?
Capt Norval Sinclair may well have been born posthumously in 1886
When he arrived in Liverpool from Nigeria in 1921 and again in 1923,
he gave his age indicating a birth around 1886#
He seems to have used the title of Captain from 1907 at least
- was this a sea captain ?
In 1916 he enlisted in Liverpool as a private in the Labour Corps
but does not seem to have gone to France
Am I right in thinking that he died in 1955 when Bob was aged 10 ?
He married Ciddy in 1944,but did he have any other children apart from Bob ?
Bob's wife Rita once met a Constance Marley who claimed to be Norval's daughter
Was this true and if so,what is known of Constance ?

Robt A and Norval Sinclair were brought up by the Bloomfields
Their mother Ellen Bloomfield 1854-1952 had a younger brother Hugh Alex Coskery Bloomfield 1865-97+ whose 1897 marraiage was witnessed by R Marley
Robt A seema a bit too young in 1897 to be a witness
- could it have been Mrs R(ie Ellen herself) ?
Ellen(daughter of Richard Bloomfield)is described as coloured on her 1876 marriage cert
What is known of this family ?

Many thanks for any information

Jan,

There is a Markfield Rd., off Knowsley Rd.

Could the address have been mistranscribed?
