TEEN AGE ORPHANS

Post by Marie »

Does anyone have any clues as what happened to families orphaned when teens, I have just discovered that my father's stepfather and mother died within 9 months of each other June 1921 and March 1922. The children were 12,14,15&16. It was said my Dad, the fourteen year old was sent to a farm in Wales he ran away from there. Two girls were older and the younger was a boy.

Any ideas?

more than likely the 12yr old was sent to a group home the 16 yr old would have been on her own. as for the 15 yr old if she was close to 16 she may have been allowed to go with her sister.
southport woman long way from home. aka "Tide is always out at Southport Wombat"

Hi Marie

The only thing you can do is find the rellies of the parents.. and try and find them in a directory in 1920's 30's get an address and then check out the electoral roll for that address to see if any of the Williams kids are living with them
children's names were Nellie 1906, Elizabeth 1907, Charles Joseph 1908 (my Dad) and Richard 1910
Can't think of any other way of finding them.. do you know who they all married ???

Sorry Colette, they aren't going to be on an Electoral Roll for another few years - only adults over 21.

ORPHANS 1922

Post by Marie »

I think, that because she remarried, she lost touch with husband's relations. I have e mailed second cousins who do not recall the children. These four kids are the ones I am missing from family tree, except for my Dad. It is quite odd as we had some info re orphans and being sent to a farm at 14 this was my Dad.

Did not realise it was after second marriage. Stepfather was a mariner died in 1921 mother in 1922. There was also heresay that girls had gone to Canada. Do I need to go into Liverpol Records to check childrens homes? How do I check emigration lists for 1922 for the girls?

Help much appreciated.

Unfortunately the date you are interested in is too late for any available Canada censuses, but you might be lucky in finding other details.

http://www.findmypast.com/home.jsp has records of passenger lists but there are many others online.

Can I suggest that you choose the "Search" button at the top of this page and enter the word "Canada" and choose to search on the "Websites" board. You will find some helpful suggestions, including a link for industrial schools.

Another suggestion is that you broadcast that you are searching - put the details on http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/home/ and also place notices on the Old Pals/Ex Pats Section of the Liverpool Echo http://icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk/

Hiya

so wife of Charles Joseph (ELLEN HUGHES) remarried after he died yes ??? then she and second hubby both died 1921 & 1922.

Mary they would be in their 20's in the 1930's Richard being 20 in 1930.

I would check out Electoral Roll 105 South St Toxteth as Eleanor is still there in 1938.. she hasnt moved..I know bboth girls could have married by then this is the problem.

Didnt your dad keep in touch with his sisters ??

Bernardo's Children were being brought into Canada up to about 1910 or thereabouts but other groups continued for another decade or more bringing orphans into Canada. You might try googling "Bernardo's children" or "Canada's Home Children". It may yield something... I know there are researchers transcribing and collecting data on these groups. Good Luck! :)

WILLIAMS FAMILY 1920'2

Post by Marie »

Thanks Mary, Tina, Collete for advice. No my dad was not in touch with any of his family when my mother met him in Llandudno in 1936. His first wife had just died giving birth to their son. I am in touch with that child who still lives in Wales. I would just love to know what happened to his siblings.

He had a pretty bad time altogether father died when he was eight, step father when he was 14 then, a few months later, his Mum. Then his first wife.

I will try what you say and let you know how I get on.

Thanks again

Marie
