Well done Holly and Susan for what seemed to be a good bit of work.
Hello Kathleen and welcome to the forum.
I'm afraid we will need a little more information from you, the very minimum is when and where Richard died in 1982 as the entry in the indexes will give his date of birth - or at least the date of birth believed to be correct by the person who registered the death.
As we are talking as recently as 1982 are there any descendants of Richard who have the accurate details? we would really like to know the month with a name like Hughes, and whether he had a middle name, or know where in the country he was born, we could easily be looking in Liverpool when we should be looking in Wales or anywhere.
Where have you got the date of birth of the older Richard from? I notice that originally you thought 1894 and later 1893, so you don't appear to be too sure.

Nice one Tina! If Kathleen confirms this she will need to obtain the marriage certificate to confirm the details - age, occupation, address etc. of Richard and also his father's occupation.
Harriet Fincher married Richard Hughes Q2 1915 West Derby 8b 970
These are the details you will need to order the certificate online - easiest way is through the GRO. http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/
The alternative is that if you think they were married in a RC church - and if you can be positive about which one, then you could request a look up if anybody is visiting the Record Office and is willing to do one for you.

Firstly to answer the question Q2 = Quarter 2 ie April-May-Jun. That is how the indexes are organised.
So if he died at the end of August 1982 then his death SHOULD have been registered in Q3 - July-August-September of that year, at the latest in Q4 if there was a problem.
So to make sure, I checked Q4 and there were no Richards without a middle name, nor one who died in the Liverpool area. So back to the expected date of Q3 and there is
Richard Hughes District Liverpool Vol 36 Page 0990
This also gives me a date of birth of 6 No 1917.
Do you know from his daughter whether this was his correct birthday?
If so, then the Richard that Tina found above, registered in Q3 can't be the correct one since he wasn't born then.
Well Tina has crossed fingers!! I've just searched for a birth for Richard in the Q4 1917 and discovered the one with the mother's name Fincher! So I think she's just muddled it up.
If you decided you wanted to order the birth certificate then the reference would be Q4 1917 Liverpool 8b 94, but I don't think you do, I suspect that this confirms mother Harriet Fincher, the details you now have for the marriage to get the certificate.

hi just received richard married cert, thanks to all your help but in the fathers name there is a line across and no name or profession.so please what is that all about.thanks kathleen
Unfortunately this would indicate that Richard was illegitimate and he probably had no idea who his father was. It's likely your searching down his paternal line has come to an end here.
If you could give the other details from the certificate, his age, occupation, witnesses etc. we could try to find a match in the 1901 census and work on his mother's side of the family.

He's not making it easy, sorry, the only real clue is his age and I have to admit that he could have given the wrong age.
Assuming that his age was accurate there are a number of possibles in the 1901 census - one in the District St Vincent's Boys Home, Fulwood, and another in the West Derby Union Cottage Homes, Fazakerley and another in the District Liverpool School Board Truants School, all of them 10, 9 or 11. Also one noted as nephew to music teacher Charlotte E Coleman in Toxteth Park.
Is there any chance that you could ask his granddaughter if she has any memories of anything he said, especially his mother's name, even the first name?
