Can anyone advise what the ruling was regarding marriage certificates and whether it had to be stated if the Father was dead or alive?
I've come across examples where we've known the father to have died prior to a child's wedding but it was not stated on the marriage cert, only who he was and occupation.
Many thanks in advance

Hi Barbara,
I have two marriage certs both at St Peters Church St, Liverpool . Both bride and grooms fathers were known to have been deceased but this was not recorded on the certs . Their names and occupations were recorded, thought it might be that the couple were not asked if the fathers had been living or deceased .

Doe and Doreen, many thanks for yr input. I guess it was down to the individual to state whether father alive or not - more guess work then!

The only thing you can be fairly certain of is that the father was probably deceased if it said so.
Where you are fairly sure that he was deceased but it wasn't stated, it might well be that the minister just didn't ask the question so no answer was given, the bride and groom might not even think of this point.
