H M Prison Walton

Post by Pete »

Hi all,
Can anyone help?. On the 1891 census, John Hopwood is an inmate, aged 48. I am trying to find how long he was there, and what had he done, and would his home address be stated.
Ta very much

Hi Pete
I'm also looking to find admissions to Kirkdale Prison with no luck.
You may have more luck than me with Walton records.
The forum will know something which may be listed at LRO.
Have you John in later census? It could show when his kiddies were born which may give a time frame for his sentence?
I wish you all the best

Haha Colette! check Isaac Parry Lunt in the newspapers - the Great Cotton Swindle - for a clerk he managed to embezzle over £150,000 and that was in the 1890's, a nice little sum.

There are certainly Calendars of Prisoners (Ref 347 QUA/2/ for around that date) held in the Liverpool Record Office but I'm not aware of what information is contained.

when it says inmate are you sure it was the prison and not the workhouse as I thought one of mine was in jail turned out he was committed to the poorhouse cause no one wanted to take care of the old beggar.

Walton Prison

No records of inmates survive for Walton Prison (apparently they ended up in a skip) The only way you can find out what offence he committed is by hoping there is a report in the local papers or looking through the court records that are held by Liverpool Record Office.

347 MAG Liverpool Petty Sessions covering dates 1851 to 1977
347 QUA Calender of Prisoners covering dates 1844 to 1956

Hope this helps
